With every passing day the need for resorting to alternate sources of energy is becoming important. Solar energy beats all others hands down and, there are isolated instances of harnessing this – as long as the Sun will shine, its power can be harnessed for use. Only, the initial investment is prohibitive. Therefore, it should be made mandatory for all apartment blocks – they can install the system to take care of the lighting in the initial stage and the cost can be shared by the occupants. That could leave the major systems (air conditioning, refrigerator, lifts, TVs etc) to regular electricity. Some places use solar energy in a limited way for heating water – like in hotels, hospitals and restaurants. Some houses also have converted to this, even some residential colonies use solar power for street lights – but, much more needs to be done. If it is made mandatory like rain water harvesting, it would go a long way to take the load off regular electricity distribution networks.
