I'm still compiling the blockbuster video rent comments purely from lack of time but I thought I'd attempt a concise review of the Horror movie Orphan!
The person who said that all movies revolve around a half a dozen scripts wasn't far off being right. With horror films, I think there are even less scripts! The capacity to go down a stereotypical route for these movies always seems to be so hard to resist.
This script version is the one where the seemingly innocent arrival is gradually revealed to be not quite what they seem to be... Their increasingly sinister endeavours are initially kept under wraps with the people in the know either too scared to do anything, too dead or circumstances dictate that the character is not believed etc. leading to the inevitable bloodbath.
I think there is still a big market for predictable horrors that in a traditional way stick to the same sort of formula. After all, it's what we almost expect. People go to look on and be frightened, to jump out of their skins and be transfixed. So any twists, or new ways to make you jump, are always encouraged and welcomed.
As we all know, before entering the theatre, the little girl is not going to be Orphan Annie. Therefore, the content is the most crucial part of the film. So, on that premise, the graphic and consistent attempts to shock are there. It's not a make you jump 'she's behind you' type of script. Her cold and chilling capacity to manoeuvre herself into the place she wants to be are the most shocking and horrific traits of Orphan Esther.
For its genre, Orphan is worth the trip to the cinema but do not expect to be scared and hiding behind your seat. It's more of an open mouthed 'OMG' reaction you'll be receiving.
Until next time...
