Artificial Intelligence: How far off are we???

Artificial Life - it's something we were working on back before computers even existed and it looks like we'll be working on it for a long time to come...

Even with the advances we've made in computer technology, we are a LONG way from being able to program a computer with artificial intelligence. There are computer programs that can do a lot of things - mimic intelligence, react to different circumstances and "look" like they're intelligent, but when it comes to reasoning, making decisions and doing the things we humans do - they don't come anywhere close to being "intelligent"

There are some people who believe it will never happen, that it is physically impossible to build "intelligence" into a computer, but then again, years ago the world was flat and men were never going to walk on the moon either...

There are a lot of people who are terrified that some day we WILL build intelligent robots who will see humans as nothing more than insects that need to be exterminated... Arnold Schwarzeneggers "Terminator" movies were chilling and will hopefully never become a reality...
