Attack Poster of President Obama Recalls Racist Minstrel Shows of Slave-owning Times.

From an April 25 article in Bedlam Magazine: Copies of a poster of Barack Obama in Heath Ledger-style Joker make-up with the legend 'Socialism' beneath it has been appearing recently on empty walls and other surfaces around Los Angeles. It is not in the same category as the many benign take-offs on the Shepard Faire 'Hope' poster, such as the one by Australian James Lillis (more of a straightforward spoof that merely substituted a Shepardized image of Heath Ledger as Joker on the Obama poster).

That the poster has the overtones of a reverse Mistral show illustration, wherein a Black is displayed wearing white greasepaint, instead of the reverse.

Radio host Tammy Bruce posted some pictures of this odd creation at her blog Saturday (Aug.1st) morning.

As well as her visual attack on the president, Tammy Bruce, guest host for Laura Ingram's radio show, also had some harsh words for First Lady Michelle Obama.

Discussing the first lady's visit to a Washington D.C. classroom of March, 17th, Ms. Bruce incredulously recalled Obama's story about wanting to get A's in school and called her out on her usage of a supposedly "weird, fake accent."

"That's what he's married to," Bruce said, apropos of nothing, "...You know what we've got? We've got trash in the White House. Trash is a thing that is colorblind; it can cross all eco-socionomic...categories. You can work on Wall Street, or you can work at the Wal-Mart. Trash, are people who use other people to get things, who patronize others, who consider you bitter and clingy..."

Ms. Bruce is apparently of an impressive creativity when it comes to sensitivity toward balancing racist code words with more neutral terminology. It is an important factor in order to disguise her racial agenda.

In this instance, of course she had to be sure and insert a neutralizing term like ‘colorblind’ into her diatribe, that allowing her to play a race-reversal with the word, trash. After all, to an uncritical mind, the very fact of her having used the phrase at all proves she isn’t being racist – right?

In standard American English, calling anyone trash almost automatically implies that they are White people, as in white trash. In this case, the Obamas have been made out to be the bizarre-version of the lazy, uneducated, trailer park dwelling White trash stereotype; dark skinned, hard-working, fully educated, socially aware Blacks living in government subsidized housing (the White House).

The former employee of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger even goes so far as to assign attitudes and language to the most powerful Black man in the world and his wife when she writes that they are, “people who use other people to get things, who patronize others, who consider you bitter and clingy...”

Someday someone somewhere will come forward and say that either Mr. Obama or Mrs. Obama used them, or patronized them, who considered them bitter and clingy – and the Obama’s will very likely be guilty of the charges. It’s actually quite clever of Ms. Bruce to condemn the First Family by accusing them of engaging in behavior that everyone is guilty of at one time or another in their lives.

Bruce's own website describes her as "an openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty "progressive feminist" who has voted for presidents as diverse as Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

“When was the last time you saw a first lady feed the homeless and it was not Thanksgiving?,” asks
Joni L. Reynolds on thedailyvoice.com, “When have you seen a first lady visit DC schools on more than one occasion? When have you seen a first lady bring students to the White House kitchen or students to help plant a vegetable garden?”

The African-American mother, writer of the blog called Ebony Mom Politics concludes,You have not seen it because this is the first time it has happened. It is acceptable to criticize Obama's policy decisions, but to call him and his family trash crosses a line that should not be crossed.”

On the matter of the Minstrel show look of the posters, Wikipedia.org defines the minstrel show, or minstrelsy, was a form of nineteenth century American entertainment consisting of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music, performed by white people in blackface or, especially after the Civil War, black people in blackface.

Minstrel shows lampooned black people in mostly disparaging ways: as ignorant, lazy, buffoonish, superstitious, joyous, and musical.

Oh, and as for that hoary, old specter of the dreaded Socialism that the Irrational Right just loves to dust off and shake in front of everybody's face two or three times a year; Americans should look around themselves, the US has been socialist for the last eighty years or so.

Who pays you for this stuff? Really? I mean "trash" can mean a woman of what was termed "loose" morals. It can mean "porn," just where are you getting some of your analogies? And socialism is exactly what most of Obama's programs are, and the Joker depiction does appear to be accurate with respect to some of his campaign rhetoric and what has occurred since.

Although, I think this is again the master pulling the puppet strings. If we are to head into world socialism, and if our Constitution is actually to be erased - the Marxists and those without any moral fibre at all which is what those who are behind the Republicrat agenda - will use the divide and conquer method.

And you are either blithely ignorant of what is going on here, or a part of it actually.

Oh, another "blue state" New England liberal living already in one of those socialist states more or less. Should have known. Since it is those in the original 13 that seem to have the hardest time reading that Constitution and have forgotten it - while walking by the relics of that history on a daily basis.

Amazing. The Midwest and some of the Western states have more of a knowledge of our intended form of government than those in the North and Northeast, that's for sure.

Including those in Washington.

We are still in this war, are we not? Obama's foreclosure rescue was aimed at new home buyers most of all, in order to trap another generation into those flex and escalating loans, and did absolutely nothing for those that have already been hit with this tsunami.

And just raised your taxes with his Cap & Trade scam well beyond that piddly $600 credit.

And you DON'T think he's a Joker?

Racism slams for every occasion, appears to be the liberal's tools. Can't argue facts or evidence, or even logic, simply hurl racial slurs and call themselves "politically correct" and "tolerant."

Although, actually, I'm feeding into this, so it appears your earned your salary today, whatever it is and from whomever is pulling your chain. Are you Canadian actually, by any chance? Since it appears there are a lot of foreigners writing as Americans on this site, especially with their lack of true knowledge of U.S. history.

Yes, it has been socialist for the last 80 years or so. Thanks for a socialist Democrat - Wilson. Who regretted it to the day he died, since he did lament that he felt in partially privatizing our currency under the same European bankers that had many fleeing England in the 20's and 30's, that it would leave this country's citizens homeless.

And his predictions are coming true. So most of us think going in reverse is a lot better than progressing to Marxism.

Sorry that I took so long to reply to your postings, we took this week for what may be the only vacation of this year; my wife and I tend to go to where there is no internet. As for your messages, the five postings in a row on this thread and they are all yours, all in less than twenty-four hours.Obviously, something I wrote touched a nerve in you and you couldn’t stop until you got it out of your system.Let’s get to your concerns one by one, shall we? A) "trash" can mean a woman of what was termed "loose" morals’Now that’s an interesting attempt to misstate a person’s premise, take it out of context, put up two other definitions, and pretend yours are the only correct ones.As anyone who has studied even rudimentary English in American public schools could tell you, ‘trash’ used in the singular pejorative sense will normally mean a woman of loose morals (that floozy tramp who tried to steal you man down at the Dew Drop Inn, just down the road a piece from the Hank Williams Jr. Memorial Fish & Bait Shop and trailer park, for instance), but, when used in the broad sense –as Bruce did in attacking the entire Obama family- then the ‘trash’ is an all-purpose condemnation, which always means White Trash (as when New York Magazine put Anna Nicole Smith on their cover, then splashed White Trash Nation in black-block letters across her seated figure – arrogant and casually disrespectful of anyone who identified with her and that culture).Of course, you also ignore the fact that Bruce even felt the need to qualify her tirade by inserting the code-word ‘color-blind’ in the hope of nullifying the race card she was clearly playing.B) ‘If we are to head into world socialism, and if our Constitution is actually to be erased - the Marxists and those without any moral fibre at all which is what those who are behind the Republicrat agenda …’World Socialism, right, -- oh, and the lack of a moral fiber, of course, of course. And this coming from the person who wrote: ‘another "blue state" New England liberal living already in one of those socialist states more or less. Should have known. Since it is those in the original 13 that seem to have the hardest time reading that Constitution and have forgotten it…’So, let me get this straight, you pigeonhole me by the only means you can, by pretending that where I might live defines who I ultimately am –even accusing me of being Canadian (mmm, you did notice that AllVoices is a Canadian based site, er? Gee, I guess not) and it doesn’t dawn on you for a moment how you’re engaging the same kind of prejudiced, bigoted simplisticisms that you are supposedly defending Bruce over, is that right?Moral ‘fibre’ most certainly!C) ‘We are still in this war, are we not? Obama's foreclosure rescue was aimed at new home buyers most of all, in order to trap another generation into those flex and escalating loans, and did absolutely nothing for those that have already been hit with this tsunami. You know what? Your whole paranoia thing about World Socialism and our still being at war, and all the other totally irrevelevant irrational righty stuff (Republicrats? What is that, the new N-word? You’re going to compare people in this category as unpatriotic? Evil? I suppose you’re accusing me of being that, but your writing that proves that you’re not even correctly reading what I’ve written) I’m just gonna have to take a pass on responding to it, D) Racism slams for every occasion, appears to be the liberal's tools. Can't argue facts or evidence, or even logic, simply hurl racial slurs and call themselves "politically correct" and "tolerant."And now you equate tolerant with politically correct, twin evils if ever there were any, surely.BTW, speaking of tolerant, how come someone who employs the screen-name as Ross1776 completely ignored my article ‘Finding in Fact’ that shows through historical fact that eight of the first nine of our presidents were foreign-born on foreign soil, and –until Jimmy Carter— none of the presidents were even born in a hospital … meaning most of them couldn’t produce a birth certificate if their lives had depended on it.You would think that someone with the –well, the ‘confidence’—to write ‘lack of true knowledge of U.S. history’ about other people would have had something constructive to say on the matter. But saying constructive things about people is beneath you, isn’t it?

This country has been far from socialist for 80 yrs. This country has been based and run on Capitalism for a long time which is damn near 180 degrees from socialism.

What is Social Security, a law since 1935?
What is the Federal Communications Commission, created in 1934, and is a national board that dictates just what is ‘decent’ language on the public accessible channels for all fifty states and its territories?
What is the Tennessee Valley Authority, created in 1933; a corporation that collects funds and operates completely outside the electorate for any of its decisions?
As for the Welfare System in this country:
“As the impact of the Great Depression spread across the United States, it was clear that some type of system was necessary in order to curtail the devastating effects of poverty and joblessness. President Franklin Roosevelt proposed a massive overhaul of the government by devising the New Deal in the 1930s, which was essentially a package of various social and welfare benefits aimed at relieving the effects of the Great Depression. The reality of this new welfare state would provide debate and controversy in political, social, and economic realms from that point forward. ( http://social.jrank.org/pages/680/Welfare-Programs-Early-History-Welfare-in-United-States.html#ixzz0NkGC8TQP)
And what is this thing that being capitalist is automatically exclusive of also being a socialist? You might be thinking the idealized form of Communism that Marx and Engles envisioned, but many of the early thinkers from the late 1800s on saw perfectly compatible areas between the two.
America is socialist, just like it is sexual; and it’s ashamed of being both and does everything it can to deny it.

It is freedom of speech folks. It was fair for those opposing Bush and it is fair for Obama. Race has nothing to do with this, it is about the country and who we will be as a people. The left love to rant and protest but the second the Republicans answer back they all cry like little nancys. The poster is about socialism. Socialism is the bridge between democracy and communism. Obama has a distinct vision for our country which HALF of the electorate do not believe in. It is going to be a long hot summer.

You have the wrong idea. Trash does not mean you come from any socio-economic group. It has more to do with how you live your life than how much money you have or where you live.

I am so tired of racism being an issue every time someone criticizes someone who is black. Shut up! All this crying wolf about racism is one day going to lead to the fact that any true claims of racism are ignored because everyone is so tired of hearing about it every other day. Quit your bitching.

Secondly, why is it only racism when it is directed at minorities? Why is it so appaling to use the word n*****, wetback, jap, etc., but it is funny or ok when people use the words honky, cracker, redneck, hillbilly, whitey or so many others? Fact of the matter is that racism is wrong no matter who it is directed at and I am tired of all of it. There are a lot of people that are going to disagree with this and cause a huge fuss. The problem is that there are also many people who agree with what I'm saying and don't have the courage to say it out loud. This country has trained minorities that if they just yell racism then they can get whatever they want and it is time for that to stop, but I'm afraid it never will.

I couldn't read this article in it's entirety. Your exposition lacks the educative quality to value the art as political protest. I appreciate the freedom to share your opinion but racism is not the premise behind every unpleasant piece of information about Mr. President.
Reply By EddieBuddha3 EddieBuddha3 | 3 months ago
Racism is not the premise behind EVERY unpleasant piece of information about this president (our president, yours and mine), but this birth-certificate non-issue is unique. No other president before him has ever had their birthright questioned.

And look how extreme the arguments are: Hawaii isn't a state, Obama is the 'Kenyan' President (oh, gee, it must be a coincidence that Kenya is an African nation filled with --wow, look at that!-- Black people).

And, if you can keep that short-term attention span problem in check a moment longer, about those other presidents:

a) Eight of the first nine presidents were born British citizens, born on British soil;

b) Since Jimmy Carter, the 37th president, was the first one who had been born in a hospital, that means you'd be hard pressed to find ANY of the birth certificates of any of the previous 36.

But, of course, no one ever asked for THEIR birth certificates, did they now?

Just be honest enough with yourself to admit that you're offended that the most powerful man in the world is a Black man, and he leads your country.

It'll probably help you with that attention deficit disorder thing, as well.

Can't we have a flea market at peace with the world, dedicated to health and wellness, and open to considering negotiations for hemp?

Can't we open doors to our Presidents relations with the homeless communitees in need on the streets?

Can't we build a global network of understanding for the sake of our women and children of tomorrow's peace of mind?

Can we openly co-exist amongst one another as brothers of light? Sisters of light? Families of fogiveness?

If there are people who lack awareness of our duty to love one another, please, don't take it like a task, take it like a blessing to love each other unconditionally, take it like a joy to honor one another, to settle our differences. Can our president be shown such a philosophy to live in love all the time? Can our people of a political standpoint be shown respect and be redeemed of their worries abroad?

I am one in belief of such a point, that yes, we can acheive a level of dignity, and yes, I can achieve humility as I continue through each day. I wish for our president a people of respect, a people of honor, a people of courage. And may that courage bring us out of the darkness of transgression, may that courage alleviate our worries, so our people may have a life of peace and joy. Blessed be the people of heroic acts that transcend our day to day views of life, who go out of their way to help get the job done, and who act on an understanding of togetherness and heart.

Blessed be the people of the Earth,

Racism? You people are nuts! This a parody of the joker from Batman with the words socialism under it. Why does anything that attacks Obama have to be racists? Are you people brain dead? You can't figure out a better argument than, "he disagrees, he's a racist!" Jesus, No wonder he got elected.
