A Grateful Tie-Dyed Birthday: Jerry Garcia
Today, August 1, is the birth date of musician Jerry Garcia, lead guitarist and one of the founders of the psychedelic rock band, The Grateful Dead.
Born in 1942, Garcia died at the age of 53 in August of 1995. Although perhaps best known for his musical genius and influence with The Dead, Garcia was also an avid artist and painter.
Garcia was introduced to music at a very early age, first playing piano and harmonica as a young boy before later graduating to guitar.
Deadheads everywhere mourned his too-early passing from a heart attack while in drug rehab in 1995.
