Cash for Clunkers failing, will Universal Healthcare do the same?

Cash for Clunkers was created to jump start the failing car industry. After the fall of two major car companies, now partially government owned, Obama has been eagar to bring Crysler and GM out of the red. Dealers estimate nearly 250,000 cars have been credited with the enviromental stimulus since Friday. The House is racing to pass another $2billion bill to keep the clunkers coming in and the newer more fuel efficient cars rolling out. While boosting the economy and helping the environment are both wonderful ideas, tax dollars are covering the cost. It's basically a loan from the government, get cash for your car today but tomorrow you will be getting less of that weekly paycheck. The car industry is saturated with subprime finance companies. Could all of these people racing in to trade their paid off cars in on a brand new $30,000 empty debt afford their $400.00-$800.00 new expense? Car's are known for depreciating as soon as you sign your name, unlike houses, cars never appreciate.Could this be a warning sign that maybe the healthcare plan wont survive? I'm sure all American's want to see everyone get the care they need to live a long, comfortable and happy life but is government the answer?

If you are interested in participating in the cash for clunkers program you might want to act as soon as possible. Here some of the requirments:

Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date

Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify

Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)

Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in

You don't need a voucher, dealers will apply a credit at purchase,Program runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.

The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate

Some interesting points there... I traded in a clunker Wed night and am now waiting to see if I was too late - I know buying the car wasn't something I could do without the rebate - so now if the rebate doesn't come through - will I be "forced" to buy the car anyway???

Another "problem" that this could create is if the rebate doesn't go through and the contract is cancelled - the dealership is supposed to return the "clunker" - but what happens if they've already scrapped it? Have I lost a car that was still working when I gave it to the dealership? There were obviously a lot of loose ends that were never considered when they offered this program...

One more thing that really needs to be looked at - this program (if you do the math) could never take more than 260,000 clunkers - when you realize there are more than 300 MILLION people in the country - that's nothing more than a very small drop in the bucket - was this just a "token" program that was supposed to make the Obama administration look like a bunch of "hero's" that is now backfiring on them - in a really "nasty" way?

But how many of those 300 million actually own a car and drive? I don't. Why doesn't the government ever come up with a program to help me? It's like my local grocery store that has a points for gas discount. What good does that do me?

I thought it was a great idea to boost the economy this way and to help with the "Go Green" mentality, but of course it also falls back into the working class Americans who now have to suffer on their weekly pay checks just to try and boost the economy. Will anything ever work out in our favor? I suppose not anytime soon. Nice article, I enjoyed the heads up on all the requirements.

I wish I could confidently say - Of course this is no reflection on the health care plan, how ridiculous! But the government has limited funds, and unless that can be very carefully worked around to build a plan that is reliable, we may have a bad situation.
