As President Obama sits down at a Rose Garden picnic table for a beer with Henry Louis Gates & Sgt. Joseph Crowley, many people want know what they are drinking. Although this may seem a bit contrived, the beers are red, white and blue.
Obama is drinking the white – clear: Bud Light, owned by Belgian beverage giant InBev. Gates is having Red Stripe, Jamaica-brewed and owned by Diageo. And Crowley has ordered Blue Moon, owned by MillerCoors (at least one of the three is still an American company.)
They're the session beers made for a bunch of friends sitting down to drink one after another. Session beers are meant to be drunk in quantity so they don't fill you up and can be drunk without too many deleterious effects.
It seems as if President Obama and Professor Gates are trying to send a message with their choices, but Crowley is probably just drinking what he likes. Obama choose what appears as an all American brew, and Gates selected a beer from an island where the majority of people are not white.
May we all be able to sit down and at a table and listen to those who most provoke us for they represent our mirrors, and they are our greatest teachers.
