Boston officer calls Gates a "banana-eating jungle monkey"

According to CNN, a Boston police officer, Justin Barrett, sent out a mass email in which he referred to Henry Louis Gates as a "banana-eating jungle monkey." Note that Barrett was not the arresting officer; that was Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley.

Barrett has been placed on administrative leave. He regrets his word choice and claims that he is not a racist.

His "jungle monkey" comment was used when referring to Gates' heated verbal 'assault' of James Crowley, at the time that Crowley investigated the break-in of Gates' home. He continued to use the term throughout his email.

It is possible that Barrett could lose his job for his seemingly racial slurs.

It would be fully appropriate that this officer be fired; it's one thing that he used the term repeatedly in his message, it's an entirely another that he continues to insist that he's not a racist.

When a person with the social responsibility of a police officer is involved in an incident as obvious as this one, who then broadcasts his own race hatred in such a glaringly blatant manner, and yet STILL insists after he's caught that he isn't a racist, that person should not by allowed to carry a gun.

I agree. If you can speak about someone in such a hateful way at all, not to mention openly and without appropriate apologies, you must not have the public's safety in your hands.

Quite an outburst by Barrett. It seems a very spontaneous remark, and surely, Barrett must have bitten his tongue after uttering that remark.

Not only should this jack ass cop not be allowed to carry a gun, but he shouldn't be allowed to not only wear a badge but never be allowed to wear a badge again, He appearantly confuses public servant with, public slanderer.

You know, I just made the association; Barrett calls Gates a 'Banana-eating, Jungle Monkey' which surely is a derivative of the Bush/Cheney slur against the French, 'Cheese-eating Surrender Monkeys.'

Has anyone else encounter examples of the B/C slur, either in the public venues, or even in more personal conversations? Say, for example, in a bar, or at the gym?

It would be fascinating to see if the term, as derisive as it is, can or has or even will migrate into other forms.
