Oil Refinery May Spark civil strife between Kurds and Arabs

Brandon : Canada | 4 months ago

The Kurds have opened their first oil refinery taking them one step closer to independence or alternatively further conflict with the central Iraq government and the Arab minority in the oil areas.

The Kurds want to incorporate four oil rich areas into Kurdistan while the central government and Arab minorities are resisting. The central government has been dragging its feet over the issue.

During the Hussein era many Arabs were encouraged to settle in Kirkuk now Kurds are trying to reverse the process. The Kurds have already passed their own oil law while the central government still has none. A number of contracts not recognised by the central government have been signed by the Kurds with international oil companies.
