Italian Reforms Minister Umberto Bossi called for the withdrawal of Italian troops from Afghanistan at a meeting in northern Italy, arguing that he would “bring them all home”. The Minister is a key member of Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s conservative government.
Such remarks were immediately dismissed by the Italian Defence Minister, who insisted the Italian troops would stay in Afghanistan. Mr Bossi was reacting to two separate attacks in Afghanistan yesterday that wounded three Italian soldiers. According to him, even while Afghanistan was a difficult problem, troops should be withdrawn, “given the results and costs”.
The position of Reforms Minister may signal changes in the government coalition, which has been united on the war in Afghanistan until now.
Italy has 2800 troops in Afghanistan, providing security for Afghanistan as part of international fight against terrorism.
Thus far, 14 Italian troops have been killed in Afghanistan, with the latest fatality being a soldier killed by a roadside bomb this month.
