donkey painted to look like a zebra

According to a very odd story at Yahoo,a poor donkey had to don stripes in order to fake a zebra. The director said they tried using henna but it didn't work and wood paint seemed inhumane, so the zoo incharge had the bright idea to use hair dye.He tried it on the animal after his hair was trimmed off. Thus he was made to represent a zebra, according to Mahmud Berghat, the director of a zoo in Gaza,Margah, which is near the Bureji refugee camp in Palestine. He felt sorry for the children as they had never seen a zebra before.

There is a shortage of wild animals in this war torn area ,so just to make the spectators feel happy,( they are mostly school children )the donkey had to be used in place of a real zebra which was hard to be made available.

They can't tell the difference but the director disclosed two clever university students had recognized that it was a donkey and not a zebra.

The poor animal has his head down and stands further away from the door so as not to be too much in the limelight.

Besides ,there is a very old lion which is not in such a good condtion.

The Gaza Zoo authorities made a good decision. Zebras are ferocious untameable beasts and cause more injuries in zoos worldwide than the big cats.

an out-of-the-way piece of news - thanks for sharing ... it is a case of official cheating, hence not objectionable ... there are instances of birds being painted and sold off as originals ...

Thanks Prabirghose and Raul for your observations. The poor donkey had to face the music and take the place of a zebra.I guess it was done in good faith ....to bring a smile on the school children's faces!

Really, this is the best result all round. A wild animal, in this case a zebra, isn't put in captivity and the domestic donkey is spared what would be its usual life of back breaking labour in return for being painted up to look like a wild animal. Everyones a winner.
They could do the same with lions and tigers. Replace them with domestic cats and either have magnified glass on the enclosure to make them look bigger, or have normal fences and just pretend they're really far away...

Yes Juggernaut. Those are some of the fraud things people do to fool the public.Like there was a joke about a man in a lion's garb who is in a cage as an imposter. He's scared to go near the other animals cage, when he hears a voice say 'How much are they paying you?' This comes from another lion's cage.

well i forgot to add in this news i read it the day before yesterday and they have no other option ..the zoo in gaza has dead animals still there due to Israeli bombs and this is the only option they have to bring smiles on peoples faces. i bet even the donkey will be happy to see people smiling.

You're so right Raul. They also don't have funds to import wild animals. Thus they have no choice but to paint the docile little donkey and bring smiles on the children's faces.

I think Juggernaut180 has the best take on the situation: one less zebra captured & caged, one relatively easy life for a donkey, & the local school kids feel they've seen the real thing.

The thing about his second suggestion, to take domestic cats, make them look like tigers, lions, etc., then put them behind plates of magnifying glass -- well, there's an American cat breeder (I don't remember her website & I'm too lazy to look right now) who brags that she'll have a domestic breed that will look like a miniature tiger within the next ten years or so. She doing the intense cross-breeding thing (cousin-to-cousin, brother-to-sister, mother-to-son, etc) so I expect that she'll come out with a beautiful mini-tiger who'll be as dumb as a stump.

But SOMEBODY will buy it, that's for sure.

Anyway, J180's scenario could come to pass if she's successful.
