Numbers can be deceiving. Even as her Wasilla Alaska picnic drew over 5,000 attendees, Sarah Palin’s national poll numbers are quickly deflating.
Palin’s annual Wasilla picnics have typically drawn roughly 2,000 people while today, the first of three Palin events, the farewell soiree was estimated to have hosted 5,000 attendees. Although her popularity remains, many of those in attendance would not comment on her gubernatorial antics.
“Some in the audience were there to catch a glimpse of Palin in her role as a national celebrity more than to support her political views.
Ozzy Cruz from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and a New York City resident who gave his name only as ‘Tom,’ traded a camera back and forth, trying to snap photos of each other near Palin.
“The two men had traveled down for the day from Talkeetna after hearing about the picnic. Dodging a question about whether they agreed with Palin’s politics, the two men said they found her ‘fascinating.’” [Anchorage Daily News, July 25, 2009]
While Ms. Palin was working the crowds in the 49th state, the Washington Post-ABC News poll reported a 53% unfavorable rate and 57% of those surveyed stated she did not have a firm grasp of the issues.
Sarah Palin remains notably vague on her future plans, but continues to tease that she will use social networking avenue “Twitter”:
“Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin let everyone know on Twitter that she is just 10 days from throwing off the reins of elected office to go rogue.
“Referencing her announcement to step down as governor on July 26, she posted this tweet Friday: ‘elected is replaceable;Ak WILL progress! + side benefit=10 dys til less politically correct twitters fly frm my fingertps outside State site.’” [http://www.politicsdaily.com/2009/07/17
So the Palin drama continues – and I don’t believe this is being fueled by the media as much as by Palin herself. Mark my words, this woman has her eye on a house on Pennsylvania Avenue, and if that happens in 2012, God help us all!
