Are You Prepared?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have put forth a great deal of effort into building their website, filling it with simple, easy-to-follow instructions on steps to take in the event that your city is hit with a terrorist attack. The completed project can be viewed

Precautionary measures listed here include:

Having a complete understanding of the disaster plans specific to your location.

a. This includes, but is not nearly limited to, knowing the first response plans of schools, employers, and your community. This information should be found with the school administrators, work supervisors, and your fire department.

b. Be aware of a complete list of hospitals available to you. The facilities closest to the event are often the busiest, and it can be critical to be able to locate another hospital or clinic elsewhere.

If you find yourself in a bombing event:

1. Remove yourself from the area. Stay calm. Hysterics will only endanger you more.

2. Stay away from crowds. Crowds are often vulnerable to second attacks.

3. Stay away from cars and trucks. It is possible that they contain explosives.

4. Avoid damaged buildings. Make sure that you are at least 200 yards from any damaged structures in case of structural failures.

5. Call for first response teams if they have not arrived yet.

6. Listen to first responders. Be attentive and mindful of EMT's, military personnel, police, or supervisors.

7. Help those around you. Look for the injured and disoriented and help them anyway you can. Call for EMTs as soon as possible.

If you are present during a terrorist attack, be aware and alert for these signs and seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of the following:

Excessive bleeding
Persistant cough
Trouble breathing
Trouble walking or numbness of limbs
Back, chest, or stomach pains
Headache
Burning eyes or blurred vision
Dry mouth
Diarrhea or vomiting
Burning skin or rash
Loss of hearing
Injuries that increase in redness, swelling, or pain
Injuries that do not improve after 24 to 48 hours

There are many ways to protect yourself and your loved ones in the event of a terrorist attack. While not all casualties can be prevented all the time, if you just take time to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally, your critical thinking skills may very well save your life, and those who are with you there.
