We just completed a two week book promotional trip, by car, through the upper Midwest of the US, specifically the States of South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska. This region, a portion of the bread basket of America, represents some of the most productive farmland on the continent.
We came away from this journey with two very sobering conclusions. Unlike Colorado and the rest of the Southwest, the farmers do not use illegal Mexican migrants to do the manual labor. We did not see a single Mexican on the entire trip, until returning to Colorado that is. Without the illegal migrants in their millions, the area college and high school kids are all able to find summer jobs in the harvest. What a concept: no illegal aliens = jobs for our young citizenry.
The second conclusion: the economy is much worse than Washington will have us believe. The American people are being blatantly lied to by Obama and his entire administration. The misinformation being spoon fed to us by all media is unbelievable. The most prosperous farming areas of this country show the effects of fiscal irresponsibility on a never-before-seen scale--shops shuttered, factories closed, people idled or moved away. We intended to also tour Michigan, however, local TV and radio news, as well as conversations with people in Wisconsin, caused a change of plans. The State of Michigan is in the throes of complete financial collapse, so why waste time promoting books to people who may not have a job, or little possibility of finding one.
It is way past time for the rank and file citizens of the USA to wake up and pay attention to what is being done to our country on a daily basis. They are shoving it down our throats, folks, because they know we will eventually begin to push back. That time is upon us. Inform yourselves, push back or lose everything that this great nation has stood for.

No matter what shape the economy is in, the farmers have always had it harder than anyone else. We complain about the high prices of stuff at the grocery store but the truth is the farmer sees very little of that money; it's everyone else that makes the bucks.
I had a dairy farmer tell me once that they get about 50 cents a bucket of milk, which is several gallons.
