New York City, the Big Apple, the City that never sleeps is subdued in a deep slumber. While the downturn of the economy has been gaining its deadly momentum, big cities such as New York seem to be badly hit.
The city that never slept, where young people partied starting Thursday nights is now hard pressed to see queues outside any nightclubs or restaurants on Friday nights. There was a time, in the not too distant past when virtually all medium to high end restaurants required a solid reservation a few hours prior to the arrival, however nowadays its a walk-in and you are sure to be seated.
On Friday nights, a stroll on the posh upper east side will make anyone wonder where everybody is? As recent as five years ago, casual banter of young people could be heard in the wee hours of the morning, as they ambled their way home. These days however, silence is the assured visitor.
If you walk into a boutique and fancy a dress, you can actually negotiate the price. More often than not, boutique owners are willing to give you a decent discount. This is the city of high fashion and snobbish boutiques- not so anymore. People are evidently not spending money, many a clubs have gone quiet and many are out of business. The empty chatter at all odd hours of the night has been replaced by the occasional exhaust of a car speeding to its destination.
And from the looks of it, it will be a while before things face an upswing. For now, the city that never sleeps, is ensconced in its slumber.
