In many cities of Pakistan ,especially Hyderabad, parents were hopeful that a miracle would happen because of the solar eclipse and change their paralysed child's destiny.

According to local paper DAWN, children who had some kind of ailment were buried up to their necks (with only their face visible) in mud in hope to cure their paralysis or ailment. They were buried near the banks of river Indus which is about an hour away from Hyderabad, in Pakistan.

Some people posing as spiritual healers also declared that the solar eclipse was a good sign for healing those who had some kind of illness. Some parents felt that even is a slight improvement was felt by this process of healing they would be grateful to the Almighty.

On the other hand a psychiatrist said that these were just myths and had nothing to do with medical science.

However ,it was said that people in India and China showed a great deal of excitement and fervour and there was certain amount of fear too.

It was the longest solar eclipse of the 2ist century and it caused a strange kind of darkness.

There is superstition everywhere. In the west we do not have 13th floors on buildings or numbered in elevators etc. I mention this because my first read of your article brought a smirk to my mind with regards silly superstitious culture ha..ha..On a rethink, what parent wouldn't go to any extreme for a sick child and besides one person's superstition may be anothers ritual.

Thanks for your observations,Raul and Andy.Yes, I noticed in the U.S. they don't even use number 13 for houses or streets. In our country atleast, we don't think 13 an unlucky number.

And I bet you 99.9% of the people who are superstitious about the number 13 couldn't even tell you why. I bet the date October 13, 1307 (a Friday) means absolutely nothing to them.

Superstitions are culture based. For some the number 13 is lucky, for others its a sign of bad luck. Its even present in sport, where scoring 87 (13 less from 100) is supposed to be unlucky as where scoring a 111 is considered to be called a "Nelson" and is supposed to be unlucky.

The point however is you create your own luck. If you think its unlucky, your mental position will create the unlucky situation around you. In other words, you get what you think.

Its the same for cricketers who feel its unlucky and get out trying to play a rash shot to avoid getting out and ultimately get out.

Superstitious? NO.. Its all in the mind.

People like my family in Australia will use all kinds of quack medicines
because they think it's going to cure their ailments. The quacks killed
my grandmother first, my step mother followed her because my father was
importing quack medicines from Zagreb in Croatia. He as is known left us
a year ago because he wouldn't take his medicines prescribed by doctors
for diabetes but always using quack cures that do nothing. 26/7/2009.

Indians too believe in this mumbo jumbo. The worst thing about the eclipe is that staring at the sun without protective eye gear may cause serious damage to the human eye.

Thanks for your comments.it is really silly to be so superstitoius about these things.Educated people especially, should reason out and not be so cautious about numbers, dates etc.
