On July 21, 2009 LEGO Systems voluntarily recalled the Power Function IR Remote Controls from its LEGO kits in cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The remote's batteries can overheat and thus possibly burn consumers. LEGO received four reports of batteries overheating. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
The remote, which is pictured, was manufactured in China and had only 1,600 units sold to the market before the recall. The product was available through LEGO catalogs and online at LEGO.com for only 13 months before taken off the market.
