Bad economy impacting everyone... image taken from Word Clipart
Bad economy

In the recent days I have been catching up with my firends, who are graduates from various schools around the US. What is apparent is that all of us, highly educated with years of experience are all struggling to make ends meet.

Whether we made money in stock opitons, real estate or private equity and decided to either start a business or re-invest the money. We all have lost it regardless of where we invested the money.

If I look at real-estate, if we bought a house in the last 4 or 5 years in major US cities, lost money. Some of us who sold the house and decided to invest in a start up have also lost money as most startups are stuggling to keep financed and new investors are devalueing the companies by 50% of the previous round.

It seems everyone owes someone money and are highly leveraged.

If this is going on among 38 to 42 year old highly educated, entreprenuerial, motivated and career oriented folks, what is going on with people who do not have access to opportunities.

amra1, Thank you for your comments and illuminating the tragic circumstances of our economy. Just proves that nobody is insulated from the downward spiral of the world's economy and I am seeing the same things amongst my friends and family, regardless of profession or net worth.

What's going on with people who don't have access to opportunities? They're waiting for Barack Hussein Obama, the president on training wheels, to rescue them - and they'll be waiting a long time. The very sad truth is that things will probably get much worse for those people before they get better. Corporate America, as well as small business, is at a hiring standstill due to underlying fears of government mandated health care and higher taxes. The devaluation of our currency, a 13 trillion dollar national debt, and record deficits have brought this country to the brink. I, personally, remain optimistic. The country has come to the end of an economic boom, a cycle that occurs every other decade or so. In my lifetime, I remember the recessions of the late 70's to early 80's, the early 90's, the tech bubble burst of Y2K, and 9/11. We always bounced back. The question is: Will our leaders in Washington do what it takes to keep our current economic situation from sliding into a depression? So far, I'm not too impressed.

I agree with you, but we need to find a way to come out of this! I am used to boom and bust but our government has kept our economy going by artificial means e.g. by keeping interest rates low and causing the real estate boom, people borrowing against their inflated homes...... and spending on consumption.... We really need an economy that creates job...even now startups are having a very tough time raising money. Investors are paralyzed

Nobody is insulated from recession. Harvard was the last place I thought would be affected by it though.

    You're 38? I thought you were in your 20's.

can you imagine how bad it is for someone here in Pakistan to try get a loan. I have a great small business idea, but no capital.

There is no logic to thinking that raising taxes helps in a recession. Anyone who thinks that should have to fall down the income scale and live on the poverty line immediately.

This economic decline is similar to the decline of the 1930s, slow and gradual. We're just at the beginning.
