A Black Bear like I met yesterday

Ran into a large Black bear yesterday..almost face to face from 20 feet away. I scared it off..but boy, was my heart pumping for a bit after that! I was reminded there are Grizzlies here also and must excercise some caution while walking the backroads near the cabin playing my mouthharp and note writing.

Although no stranger to the North and this country in my past; I am a fella returning to the country after a long term in a large city. Mind you...there are dangers in the big city also! Drugs, crime, cars, noise..etc, etc.

It feels good to be back up North in clear, wild country. We cut and hauled 2 truckloads of pine firewood out of the land today. It felt good to hump firewood again and smell pitch and pine needles. There is a possibility of a job in the woods for me next week although I am unsure about jumping into work right away as I have a small pension and want to write for a while. We shall see.

Please feel free to have a look at Smithers website below to get an idea of where old citified Slydog has flown into on Hawkair some 5 days ago. My cat is still hiding & hopefully adjusting to being around 3 other cats and a large Collie dog named Laddie (NO..not Lassie!) :-)

I now have some classic country music on and a cold, homemade beer and handrollings to smoke. I am relearning that Life IS Change.

Just remember that those big bears LOVE our goodies!
Awesome photo.
I live in the city because I have to, but love the sounds and smells of the woods and water.

That bear was "up close and personal" as they say on Olympic coverage!

It is great to hear from you again. Good luck with the decision on the job. Sounds like a lot of change and adjustment going on in your life. I know how disruptive moving is, so you have my empathy.

I live about two kilometers up the hill from the city of Tagbilaran but
I wouldn't take on any job at all except to be home writing. I receive a
pension myself but writing on allvoices is an all day job most days of the week. My younger daughter came home the other night from Cebu since the revue committe are taking time off and she had a touch of a flue. NO
it's not the SWINE FLU. She felt bad yesterday afternoon and while she
laid in bed covered up, I put my hands on her and offered a slight prayer of healing to God in her behalf. Few minutes later she started
recovering. She's virtually back to normal now. Her grandmother spent
two days with us also, she took the bus to Ubay about an hour ago with
a carton of empty rice and cement sacks. We buy sacks of rice in the
supermarkets here for one sack to last us a month. Empty sacks of any
kind are used for rice, fruit and vegies when the harvesting gets done. They mainly give us lot of bananas, sometimes big pineapples and
there are sweet potatoes as well. 20/7/2009.

How do you scare off a bear and why were you humping a pine tree?

On a note, I wish I was out there in the mountains with you. That picture in your last post looked so delectable.

To scare a bear you make noise and make yourself big. Just make sure you don't get caught bewteen cubs & momma bear! As for "Humping"..see comment a little further on! Sunny here today..blue sky, moutains and
cattle mooing away in distant fields. Chainsaw sounds also.

Haven't you ever humped a tree? Best ever!

I tried once but then it told me no, and needs must oblige.

Congratulations SLY on your move. I have lived in wooded areas, well, downright wild areas since my firstborn was young. I cut my own wood, used to have to haul my own water. My daughters turned out well because of this and have a balanced perspective on life. The forest seems to be an amplifier when it comes to spirit and personal growth. The bears 'ain't nuthin' compared to the discomfort of personal growth when amplified in nature. I hear mtn lions scream at night during their 'season' of passing through the property. I photographed a bear right on the other side of my door. Don't have a dog to bark and scare off my nature friends. Take the time off and DO write. I took a year off and wrote THE CHE DIARIES. www.aveguevara.com This book tells much about my country living and what got to come through simply by living in solitude with this spiritual amplification.

Thank you Ave, Changez , Billie et al. I have lived in wild, north country before but too many moons in the big city has dulled my younger sensitivities to nature. THIS is a breath of fresh air I needed.
I chopped a big load of wood this morning with a double-bitted axe and an wedge/sledge for the tough rounds. This is how I lived in my teens and it is refreshing to have this opportunity at 56. Good friends and
beautiful country. There is a job opportunity in the works nearby PLUS I have the small pension in play now. Right now I am "decompressing" froma manic city period and the mad rush North. Adjustment...climatization and chilling out with labour & nature are on the agenda now.

PS "humping" means carrying things over a distance. If I humped a tree I run the risk of ticks and splinters on my dick! :-)

PPS I'm using a friends computer for the time being so stories/articles may remain thin until a rythym is established for scheduled use. I brought lots of stuff to work on. Should be a flood further on down the road! Love & Peace & thanks to all my Allvoices friends!

Thank you for the definition of 'humping'. My commentary was on a traditionally perceived meaning of same. I have two incredible stories, true ones I might add that I will save for my blog. With the hint of that being on my blog, AV friends, perhaps it will not remain the loneliest place on earth. I have to commment on my own commentary! In case any of y'all are remotely curious to see it before I post such stories, raise your hand, er, I mean visit me at www.aveguevara.com

P.S. I used to chop wood in lingerie :) true story
