US Soldier Captured; Taliban Releases Video

The war has gone on much too long. Many will agree with that statement. Now, for the first time in many, many months, a videotape of a captured US solider has been released by the Taliban.

This enlisted soldier, who remains officially unidentified, was reported missing from an American military base in the Mullakheil area of eastern Paktika province on July 2. He was found missing at a routine check, the Taliban claims he wandered off from his base, drunk. The military did not release this soldier's status until Thursday when the video was released.

Regardless of the circumstances of his capture, he now is the subject of a typical hostage film. The Taliban is threatening to kill the soldier unless the U.S. halts strikes in two districts: Ghazni province's Giro and Paktika province's Khoshamand. Even as the video is filled with propaganda, we see the soldier is alive and seemingly well.

The Associated Press reports:

"The Taliban claimed on its Web site on July 6 that it was holding the soldier.

"'Five days ago, a drunken American soldier who had come out of his garrison named Malakh was captured by mujahedeen. ... He is still with mujahedeen,' said the report. The short Web message did not elaborate on his whereabouts, nor did it provide any proof such as a photo.

"The U.S. military has said it intercepted communications in which insurgents talked about holding an American.

"The soldier's body armor and weapon were found on the base, and U.S. defense sources say he ‘‘just walked off" post with three Afghans after work. They say they have no explanation for why he left the base."

Now a video has surfaced and with it, more questions than answers. Does this mean the Taliban will become more active once again with captures and perhaps killings? I pray not, but it appears the flavor of the war may be changing.

Never-ending grief, endless sadness and tragedy. When will we evolve beyond the insanity that is war? This report highlights yet another incident in an ongoing (and seemingly everlasting) series of life-disrupting events. Thanks, Alexandra. I fear this begins another round of escalting war, Border. I hope I am incorrect - but haven't we all seen this much too often? Thanks for your input!

First of all, the reports of what exactly happened during the kidnapping/disappearance of the American soldier is quite odd! The Taliban news report makes it seem as if the American Soldier was in the wrong -- that he was drunk and wandered off his watch. And then, there's the point of view that the American soldier simply walked off from his post with three Afghans.

We, as Americans who feel sympathy for our soliders, friends and family members over in the Middle East, believe him to have been wrongfully captured and forced off duty.

Regardless of what actually happened, the important issue, I guess, is what the Taliban is demanding from the US government this time -- the halting of attacks in Ghazni province's Giro and Paktika province's Khoshamand. What makes me curious is what the Taliban wants ultimately and fundamentally -- for the US to get out of Afghanistan? For the US to join forces with the Taliban? What does this group want FROM US exactly and what does it want for itself ultimately?

I remember Bush saying that "we do not negotiate with terrorists", but somehow, I think this is a pig-headed statement that cannot be carried out. In theory, it's bad to negotiate with terrorists because that means we are accepting that they exist. But, terrorists do exist. Of course, then again, we can't just give in to their demands, but somehow we have to reach an agreement. Who/what is the official government of Afghanistan right now, by the way? Perhaps the key is working diligently with them to re-construct this falling country.

Aquamarina, you raise extremely important points. I think it is important to remember that any video such as this is purely propaganda for the capturing entity. No matter what the soldier says in the video, he is under diress, trying to maintain his life, doing what he is told.
This is a 23 year old Private in the Army. I know that there is not immense training in hostage training for our young soldiers. Of course he is worried he will never see his family again (and truly, that is a reasonable concern).
Negotiation with terrorists is a slippery slope that never results in positive outcomes. And, correctly, WHO is the Afghan government? Does the Afghan government have any influence over the Taliban who is currently holding this soldier?
Enough war - let's find a resolution to this and bring our troops home...yeah, on my same ole soapbox again...
Thanks for stopping by, Aquamarina!

War crimes on neither side are justified. War is certainly not a battle of petals but the killing should restrain only till the war-ground. Extending beyond that ; be it the prisoners in Guantanemo bay or a soldier captaured by Talibans , certainly falls under the domain of war crimes.

I believe the US has dropped in credibility due to our Gitmo war crimes. Only now will we see the consequences of our actions. Allknower, you are correct.

when will war end in Afghanistan? What do most people look in Afghanistan? please let the people enjoy their country because these seem to be another war.

Yes, the war has spread to the Afghan nation. More troops are being sent - there is no reduction in US soldiers being sent into the war zone. Enough already!

it is also sad to hear other people say that Muslims are terrorists i really don't know why they produce these words as Islam and terrorism are two different things
Reply By alexandraames alexandraames | 3 months ago
All Muslims are NOT terrorists - stereotyping people groups always results in confusion and pain. Terrorists can be from many different ethnic/demographic people groups. That being said, terroism (around the world) is wrong! Why is it only condemned when it targets Americans? Terrorism has been going on for decadeds (and centuries) in other parts of the globe. The US only now finds it "personal".

Thanks for your thoughts, Dytonmashall...

Doesn't it all come down to that "black gold"? Money is NOT the root of all evil...OIL is.

You will notice that the soldier is dressed in clean attire and eating happily what seams a good meal, unlike what was given to Afghani prisoners in gitmo prison in Cuba.He is pleading to the govt. and people of U.S. to end the war in Afghanistan.

Remember Fauzia, in propaganda videos, they show only what they want us to see. At Gitmo the videos that came out were not for propaganda purposes, they were to incite Americans. There is a huge difference in the two purposes.
