California is one of the most liberal states in the country, marijuana is being discussed as becoming legal for goodness sakes, so is it silly that same sex couples aren't allowed to get married? Or is that one step too far over California's "moral line"?
As of November 5, 2008, thousands of people around the country have protested against California's newest addition to its constitution. Prop 8 which says "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California", has caused quite the uproar. Those who voted "yes on 8" firmly believe that the country needs to protect and restore the traditional definition of marriage. Those against prop 8 are loudly crying out that the law is now facing discrimination against the makeup of certain families — specifically those of same-sex couples.
Whose right in this passionate and sensitive war?
Is it wrong to ban certain people from marriage in this day and age, when we as a society have come so far in accepting the non traditional? Marriage has been defined in a surprisingly number of ways by different cultures and historical movements, and will continue to vary immensely from society to society and time period. Are we now taking a step backwards by agreeing to Prop 8?
Or,
Would same sex marriages be undermining the value of marriage altogether? Those for Prop 8 believe that same sex marriages redefines marriage for the rest of society. They believe the decision has far-reaching consequences. The majority of the state believed this wasn't the way they wanted marriage viewed. This became obvious by the votes which overruled same sex marriages.
Although Prop 8 has already been voted yes, the debate still continues on, and those against Prop 8 are still passionately fighting on. Will Prop 8 be overturned in the future?
Wishfully thinking, everyone would just come to an agreement of some sort so both parties are pleased, and can go skipping hand in hand through fields of flowers. But this is real life.
Until then
