Prop 8; Is it right for this state?

California is one of the most liberal states in the country, marijuana is being discussed as becoming legal for goodness sakes, so is it silly that same sex couples aren't allowed to get married? Or is that one step too far over California's "moral line"?

As of November 5, 2008, thousands of people around the country have protested against California's newest addition to its constitution. Prop 8 which says "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California", has caused quite the uproar. Those who voted "yes on 8" firmly believe that the country needs to protect and restore the traditional definition of marriage. Those against prop 8 are loudly crying out that the law is now facing discrimination against the makeup of certain families — specifically those of same-sex couples.

Whose right in this passionate and sensitive war?

Is it wrong to ban certain people from marriage in this day and age, when we as a society have come so far in accepting the non traditional? Marriage has been defined in a surprisingly number of ways by different cultures and historical movements, and will continue to vary immensely from society to society and time period. Are we now taking a step backwards by agreeing to Prop 8?

Or,

Would same sex marriages be undermining the value of marriage altogether? Those for Prop 8 believe that same sex marriages redefines marriage for the rest of society. They believe the decision has far-reaching consequences. The majority of the state believed this wasn't the way they wanted marriage viewed. This became obvious by the votes which overruled same sex marriages.

Although Prop 8 has already been voted yes, the debate still continues on, and those against Prop 8 are still passionately fighting on. Will Prop 8 be overturned in the future?

Wishfully thinking, everyone would just come to an agreement of some sort so both parties are pleased, and can go skipping hand in hand through fields of flowers. But this is real life.

Until then

This is definitely a touchy subject. I do think there should be same sex unions. I do believe that there are situations ie... health care, hospital visitations, next of kin issues etc. Call me old fashion but I think marriage should be between a (one) man and a (one) woman as do the majority of Californians. I do believe there is a certain balance in society that is "sacred" and should not be messed with.

Replace the legal marriage certificate with a domestic contract, legal for any couple of any gender. That would allow them to be "married" in or out of a particular church, temple, coven, etc. and allow them the sanctity of marriage regardless of gender, religion or creed. That way a heterosexual couple married in a Roman Catholic church would be, for the sake of legalese, the same as a gay couple married in the First Church of the Gooey Death and Discount House of Worship.

Each legal, each married in the church of their choice.

I think as long as the government refuses to recognize same-sex unions as "marriages", a serious violation of the separation of church and state is at play. Sure, Christian fundamentalists and the churches they belong to don't have to recognize the unions as "real" marriages, but marraiage is more than a religious sacrament. It's a civil liberty; in a free country, it's a right.

Sexual orientation is not a choice any more than gender or skin color are. LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning) Americans are currently the most oppressed minority in this country, and anyone who's ever benefitted from a civil rights movement (that includes you women, African Americans, and Latinos) has an obligation to stand in solidarity with our gay brothers and lesbian sisters. It is estimated that one in ten people in the United States are LGBTQ. 10% of our population. Unlike race or gender, sexual orientation is something that can be hidden, so many homosexuals don't come out. We need to show the world and each other that we are a tolerant people, and, when suicide is the leading cause of death among LGBTQ youth, take action to correct the harm we've caused each other.

Prop 8 is hate, although most of the people who voted for it probably consider themselves to be "good Christians". I may not be a Christian, but I do believe that the model of Jesus Christ is one we can all aspire to be like (just like Gandhi). You can bet that Jesus would not make any group of people second-class citizens. It was only the angry Old Testament God who condemned homosexuality, and we've come a long way since then.

Exactly correct. I'm a Christian, and I question other Christians who can't accept that two people who love each other, commit to each other, and support each other, should be forced into a constraining box when it comes to being legally married...

It's not about religion or politics; it's about PEOPLE!

This issue is the only issue California has gotten right since it went bankrupt. Same-sex couples want same-sex marriages to be acknowledged not because of love, but because of tax breaks.

So you don't think same-sex couples love each other?
