A Micheal Jackson video obtained by US Weekly magazine shows original footage of Michael Jackson’s head catching fire upon filming his 1984 Pepsi commercial.
Jackson suffered severe burns after a pyrotechnics mishap caused his hair to burn. The new US Weekly Web site video shows Jackson’s hair catching fire.
At the time of the incident Jackson did not realise his hair was burning and kept dancing with flames on his head. People on the set tackled him extinguishing the fire and when Jackson emerged his head top is bald.
Jackson suffered second degree burns to his scalp, required several surgeries and skin grafts to treat the injury.
In Jackson’s autobiography Moonwalk, he describes the accident cause as ‘stupidity’ and wrote that ‘bombs went off on either side of my head and the sparks set my hair on fire. I was dancing down this ramp and turning around, spinning, not knowing I was on fire. Suddenly I felt my hands reflexively go to my head in an attempt to smother the flames’.
Because of the accident, Pepsi compensated Jackson $1.5m, which he donated to a burn centre named after him.
