Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt- The prime ministers of India and Pakistan are scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement Summit (NAM) in Egypt this week inviting hopes of a resumption of peace talks between the two nuclear armed neighbors.

The NAM consists of 118 member countries of developing countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe and make up almost 60% of the world population. NAM countries consider themselves not formally aligned with or against any major country or power bloc such as NATO.

The importance of this meeting between the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan SinghManmohan Singh and Pakistani PM Yousuf Raza Gilani is that this is only the second high level meeting between the Indian and Pakistani leaders since the Mumbai attacks of November 2008. At least 173 people were killed and more than 300 wounded by terrorist attacks blamed on Pakistan based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Since the attacks, the relations between India and Pakistan worsened dramatically as India demanded Pakistan take action against the responsible parties. This week Pakistan announced that it will probably put the five accused attackers in its custody on trial next week. This is welcome news for the Indian government which has predictably tied any improvement in relations with Pakistan on the prosecution of the accused for the attacks as well as curbing of violence on Indian soil from the Pakistan based militants.

Unfortunately, Pakistan has its hands full on its own soil when it comes to stopping the militants let alone preventing violence from groups inside its terroritory from carrying out attacks in India. But a willingness to fully prosecute any individuals or groups apprehended as well as dismantling the infrastructure of these organizations will go a long way in showing good faith to India in resuming a comprehensive peace agreement with its fellow nuclear armed neighbor. Similarly India must be willing to consider Pakistan’s disputes with India over Kashmir from all sides and be able to negotiate a lasting and long term peace deal that is so desperately needed in the most dangerous neighborhood of the world and one that has been elusive for over 60 years.

Pakistan and India need to resolve their differences, largely superficial, as quickly as possible. This is not a matter of just one country, this is to help the 1.3 billion people of this region by stopping arms purchases, bringing down military budgets, improving lives, making things better., The poverty and lack of education in this part of the world is so grinding that it is not something that humanity should conscious any more. The world should put pressure on both these countries to get their acts together fast, start thinking about the poor and miserable people in both countries and stop fighting with each other over unimportant historic and religious differences. It is beyond ridiculous now. Lets' just stop being so selfish all the time now.

I agree with you on this Changez wholeheartedly. We are one people with a long and rich shared history of over 5000 years. We have so much potential as a people. But so much of Pakistan's energy is focused on India. And India too is always concerned about the border with Pakistan. If only we could demilitarize that area and make peace and have an open border, think of the tremendous advantages both countries would have from decreased military spending, increased cooperation, increased trade, increased tourism, etc. The list would go on and on...I sincerely believe that the single best thing any administration of either country could do is make peace with the other and usher in a new era of peace and stability. I too sincerely hope the borders are de-militarized b/w the two countries and tourism is encouraged.We have such scenic places in both India and Pakistan which would be a treat to visit for both the peoples of these two nations.Besides the visa system too should be relaxed.

Being an Indian, I'd say that we in India have always opposed this policy of state-sponsored terrorism advocated by Pakistan since after Independence. It's only recently that the hydra-headed monster raised by them have turned back to bite them. Kashmir has been a flashpoint and the sustained efforts by so called freedom fighters, most of them mercenaries was a dangerous policy followed by Pakistan.

We have a Pakistani national caught during the Mumbai carnage and we did feel that the recent developments of withdrawing cases in Pakistan due to "lack of evidence" leaves a sour note. We have a long history of distrust between the two countries which is not going to vanish so easily. I agree talking is the only way forward 'coz we have to learn to coexist as neighbors and exchange of views help. But somehow the feeling is that Pakistan government is not as serious in its actions as it is in its talks.

With terror becoming a very real problem for India now, the government is under pressure from its people too. Maybe, the current Pakistani government is trying hard but it is just difficult to put everything aside when there is so much lack of trust.

Well, I hate to point fingers, right on the heels of calling for demilitarisation, but this is a bit or propaganda don't you think? Blaming Pakistan solely for the lack of initiative on peace talks is counterproductive and factually incorrect. Pakistan fostered the Kashmiri movement, but it would be incongruous to claim that India has also not maintained covert operations in Pakistan or that India has always maintained an open attitude to talks.

When Musharraf said talks 'anytime, anywhere', no government was willing to talk to him because it was possible concessions would have to be made.

India also has to budge from its policy that Kashmir is an 'integral part' of the country. Without movement on that, it is impossible for talks to be held. There has to be a willingness to budge on both sides of the border in order for their to be serious peace talks.

Before then, we also have to come to terms, as people, with the negative moves made by both our governments before we can move on. Claiming one side is totally innocent in this would be incongruous.

Yes there is propaganda. And there is no blame on Pakistan for lack on initiative for peace talks. I don't agree with your statement about covert operations carried out on Pakistani territory by India. Every time anything happens in Pakistan, you try to blame India and retract it two days later. Surely, this is propaganda. Just a few days back, your President agreed that Pakistan has nurtured terrorists in the past to use to their advantage. Can this admission come from any bigger quarter?

Agreed Kashmir is an issue which needs to be talked about. But, Kashmir cannot be made a point to be waved everytime any issue is raised with Pakistan.

When Pakistani territory is used by people for activities against India like in the case of Mumbai, don't you feel we are justified in feeling angry. And then no action is taken. If it was US would your approach have been the same for Mumbai culprits? People to people there are no issues. We even encourage the talent on your side for our show business. But no reciprocation for our artists. Also issues like Dawood and Kandahar hijack mastermind driving off to Pakistan rattle.

After Mumbai what has happened for lost trust to be regained or bridges to be mended? Can you see the hurt here.

Its true Rachnaparmar that we have to try to learn to trust each other although the line has to be toed very gradually.Nevertheless, for the sake of our poor down trodden people we MUST try a dialouge on regular basis and thus bring about development and progress in both the countries.Besides we should avoid spending capital on arms and ammunation and a no-war-pact should be signed between both the countries.

There is no point in having talks till it is ensured that no terrorist groups having bad designs on India are nurtured from Pakistani territory. Any talks which take place while this goes on will just be a sham.

Mumbai incident was not propaganda and not a figment of our imagination and it had nothing to do with Kashmir. Attacking and killing innocent people of any country is just not acceptable. I think this will the biggest CBM on the part of Pakistan.

Im sorry to contradict you rachnapur but PAKISTAN is always blamed without a flicker of the eyelid when ever anything happens in India,and the talks a re sabotaged before they even begin.Thats why I feel TRUST is needed to go further and we should'let by gones be by gones' and think about the future of our two nations and try to move in the right direction.
