The Curiosity Shoppe

Philadelphia : PA : USA | 4 months ago
Views: 2

Tucked away on Fourth, just off of South Street rests one of Philadelphia's hidden treasures. Surrounded by the constantly bustling, ever changing and recently commercializing Bohemian paradise is the Curiosity Shoppe. Home to all sorts of odds and ends, the Shoppe is more than the average thrift store. While it certainly functions as such, what with second hand clothing, pots and pans, vintage soda bottles and the board games our parents grew up on, this cute little boutique holds treasures beyond the average. The walls are lined with boxes of records - 45s, 33s and even eight-tracks to boot plus a wide variety of household wares that are all in prime condition. In contrast to other stores along South with tourist-in-mind price tags and flashy tractor beam signs, the Shoppe's main draw is its laid back, comfortable approach. The atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable - there are always friendly patrons browsing the racks in no great hurry. There is no great rush inside which is a nice break from the stores around the corner. What makes this shop so curious is the inclusion of a large selection of local art and music. Artisans from around the area have work throughout the store, interspersed with the thrifty catches. Screen prints and canvas, jewelry and the latest demo tapes are all to be found. The next time you find yourself overwhelmed on South Street, let your curiosity get the best of you and stop on by - you'll be glad you did.
