Crowd outside the court in association with the Sean Ball trial

Every citizen should be equal under the eyes of the law. Yeah right! I read that 3 police officers in NYC was freed from all charges after shooting a black kid during his bachelor party with 50 shots. One of the officers shot 31 rounds against the car. I for sure wasn't at the scene then, but based on what has been told through media, yet acknowledging the fact that it might very well be slanted and a skewed picture, this seems like a pretty non-proportional response. The reason was that the officers claim the group in the car tried to run for it. Let me ask you something: If you would not have done anything and three officers approach you with drawn guns, wouldn't you try to get out of the way? Most people will then react instinctively and irrational. Who is to blame for that? The group? The officers? I seriously do not know if you can fully blame either of them. Both are products of our society of today.

One thing I sadly wonder: Would this have happened to a group of white, upper class kids? I unfortunately do not think that. And even more scary. Would they have walked in the case of killing those white upper class kids? I say no way. That is the real sad part. Before we as a society start to treat people the same regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality or religion, we will never be equal under the law because the law is the direct reflection of us. Sadly we haven't come very far as for treating our fellow beings equal.

Am I wrong? If not, what do we do about it?

I don't think you are that wrong. How to solve it is however the ten million dollar question or the next Nobel Peace Prize. :-) How do we see beyond the shell of the person? I think the answer is easy. It is for each of us to take a step towards a change. Just do anything. Call it the "pass it forward"-phenomena. I do not believe it will be solved in any near future. Understanding the root of the issue is of course the first step as always. We as human beings are scared of the unknown. We fear it. Probably a survival instinct. We behave to the unknown as we behave as jumping into the cold water. Brrr or Help as it is in the case of the different people. Diversity rocks. :-)

This is what we need to overcome. We need to be able to take that step towards the unknown. To embrace our differences and realize that diversity is frickin' awesome. The only way to do that is to have the guts to do it. We should dare to give the "bird" to basically all who don't get it. We all need some ass whipping if yet only verbally. :-)

I agree with you that it is really time to start taking these steps and question the issues around us.

That makes sense. Events such as these make me feel a bit depressed. We should have come further...
