Dick Cheney

Just when I think that maybe I have awakened from the nightmare we have all been living through for the past eight years - another evil secret appears.

In the New York Times today, more of the Cheney lies surface:

"The report that Mr. Cheney was behind the decision to conceal the still-unidentified program from Congress deepened the mystery surrounding it, suggesting that the Bush administration had put a high priority on the program and its secrecy." [www.nytimes.com, 7/11/2009]

Leon Panetta, CIA Director, has been talking about this since June 23. "The question of how completely the C.I.A. informed Congress about sensitive programs has been hotly disputed by Democrats and Republicans since May, when Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused the agency of failing to reveal in 2002 that it was waterboarding a terrorism suspect, a claim Mr. Panetta rejected." [www.nytimes.com, 7/11/2009]

Nancy Pelosi was subjected to much criticism when she made the remarks against the C.I.A., even thought to misrepresent the historical circumstances surrounding her claims.

"The law requires the president to make sure the intelligence committees ‘are kept fully and currently informed of the intelligence activities of the United States, including any significant anticipated intelligence activity.' But the language of the statute, the amended National Security Act of 1947, leaves some leeway for judgment, saying such briefings should be done "to the extent consistent with due regard for the protection from unauthorized disclosure of classified information relating to sensitive intelligence sources and methods or other exceptionally sensitive matters." [www.nytimes.com, 7/11/2009]

Isn't it time for President Obama to declassify some of the documents surrounding the Bush Administration and call for an inquiry into the legality of policies and procedures?

Where is the transparency we all heard so much about during the campaign and following the election of Barack Obama? Let's find out what else took place during the Bush/Cheney reign and vow to never let this abuse of power occur again.

One might only hope, however, I do believe many, or most of the politicians somewhat protect each other. Sadly, history proves out that there has always been an issue with abuse of power. Dare I say, the age-old saying, "History repeats itself" is utterly true.

History is doomed to repeat itself - the discussion centers around "don't look back, move forward" so that our mistakes will not be revealed to the terrorists. I believe our "mistakes" are common knowledge! Let's clean house and move forward in the light of day. Enough hiding and lying - and ENOUGH Cheney!

They show Cheney as a good republican along with Newt and other ones who I am sorry to say are a bag of bad beans. And for any one to listen to anything that comes out of there mouths is as asinine as they are.
  • Reply By alexandraames alexandraames | 4 months ago
As many of these "good Republicans" continue to hold the so-called "party line" they are only succeeding in attempting to win a battle rather than the war. As long as partisan lines stand and common sense falls by the wayside, nothing will be accomplished for the American public.

The fact is, we elect people who protect the status quo. Then the status quo protects them. For there to be real justice for Cheney, it would have to come along with a real change in the system. Not very likely.

  • Reply By CaliforniaMike CaliforniaMike | 4 months ago
Alexandra, I think you are a wonderful poster, but I have to disagree with you on term limits. Term limits are a way for voters to say "Stop us before we kill again."

Much of the political disaster that is my home state has come about because of term limits. There is little or no institutional memory in the legislature, and too many true believers.

What we need more than anything is for voters to stop being so gullible and for the media to call politicians on their lies.

I also believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

    Vote 'em out.

Stop listening to the idea that longevity means more influence -- and more pork.

Vote for people who are doing a good job and throw out ones who aren't.

Having lived in New York City for 30 years --and the low point for me was the Giuliani Administration-- term limits proved worthwhile in that it sent that cold, dishonest hypocrite out the door. But, so what? Mike Bloomberg, the very next major, recently made an end-run around the city law using the power of the city council to pretend the term limits can be ignored. The power of Democracy is pretty much useless at stemming the desires of power-seeking authoritarians if people don't care enough to perform due diligence at the ballot box. Ultimately, people DO get the government they deserve, simply by how much or how little they participate.
  • Reply By alexandraames alexandraames | 4 months ago
Eddie, I truly thought the grass-roots swell of the Obama election would give us the desire for the government we desire, but you are accurate to say that we have the government we deserve... sadly so right now!

Hence the reason I write (and talk and attempt to stimulate discussion)! The minute we collectively as constituents, throw up our hands and sigh, we lose. It is time for people to step up and stop allowing the power-hungry grabbing in Washington and elect those who will serve the people!

All this talk of who knew what and when is undermining the ability of the CIA to perform it's mission at a high level. This trash talk only cripples the morale of the men & woman that serve that agency. Wait until the wars with Iraq & Afghanistan are over and then any documents that the CIA may wnat to declassify should be discussed. All these jackasses that are talking about releasing more classified information while our troops are still engaged in war should be put in jail.
  • Reply By alexandraames alexandraames | 4 months ago
Thank you for your comments. Right now, the problem is that no one in the government can trust anyone. Congress, who needs to know this information, is being lied to. The American public, who must hold our elected officials accountable, are being mislead and manipulated. I do not want to put our troops in harms way - any more than they already are - In case you haven't read other postings of my writing, my son has served three tours in Iraq and my daughter-in-law deploys in a few months.

I am suggesting (and yes, demanding) that our officials start doing their jobs - and that includes getting to the bottom of the Cheney fiasco.

I do truly appreciate your contribution to this discussion.
  • Posted By Ross1776 Ross1776 | 4 months ago
Actually, I disagree fundamentally. We have not gotten the government we deserve since the two party system actually hijacked our Constitution around 1913 in total under Wilson. Since then, neither party nor the politicians run this country, the Federal Reserve Board does and manipulates wars, mortgage crisis, the first depression and this one.

And Cheney simply was another lackey for the powers that be. As is Obama. The two parties have merged and simply cover each other's backsides while posing for the cameras pretending they are enemies.

What happened during Bush had the consent of Congress. After all, we are still in this war are we not, and it is escalating and being played up in the media in order to raise temperatures once again. So the bankers can profit.

And you believe half this garbage that is printed?
  • Posted By Ross1776 Ross1776 | 4 months ago
Like diva Pelosi really cares about those prisoners, or those illegals or anyone else but Ms. Pelosi and her private jets? How many facelifts has that woman had anyway, on the taxpayer's dime due to she and her husband's also political connections and wealth which she has amassed since entering public service?

Pelosi and Cheney probably have each other's home phone numbers, and show up at the same Washington soirees and cocktail parties.

    Are you all that naive?
  • Posted By Ross1776 Ross1776 | 4 months ago
Yes, and the New York Times is such a GOOD sourced of information. Right. And this war is continuing and escalating under Obama - so the two parties have merged or hadn't you figured that one out yet, and they all work for the bankers.
  • Posted By alexandraames alexandraames | 4 months ago
Ross, you covered my discussion and three of them that I have yet to write - you must be psychic!

I have difficulty disagreeing with some of what you have said. The elected officials seem to be most concerned with their re-election campaigns than the workings of governing the United States. That is, when they are actually in Washington, governing.

How would you suggest we change this? This experiment in democracy has morphed over the past 200+ years - but do you have a better idea? I think the American people have abdicated their responsibility by giving over all decision making processes by believing there is nothing we can do about it. I don't believe that is true. I believe the people CAN make a difference by holding the ones elected to task.

If you have better ideas, I am ready to listen. Thanks for dropping by.

For one party or the another to do what is right for America and not the party they belong to would be a dream come true.

As my Aunt would say "this is why you vote and if you don't vote then don't complain"

We as a nation have to put away our own by-partisanship and vote for the ones who are going to do what it takes to bring this country around.

In this day and age of internet we don't need to watch partisanship network news look it up and do your own investigating of any and all of the candidates of any and all offices.

We have the power to make change and change we need now not 4yrs down the road but right now. Hold you Congressmen and state reps.accountable for this is the only way to make it work.

What really gets me is the same idiots keep getting voted back into office.
The New York state legislature looks more like a school yard dust up than a governing body; so consequently nothing is getting done.
  • Posted By alexandraames alexandraames | 4 months ago
Unfortunately many state legislatures look like that - keep watching your elected officials, hold them accountable, and vote out the ones who are not serving you well.
