The GOP Should Shut Up and Let Obama and Biden Talk

Is the Honeymoon phase over?

When you pledge to change the "politics as usual" policies of the government and don’t – you lose the support of some people.

When you spend millions of dollars running campaign commercials against your opponent's idea of taxing healthcare benefits, telling the American people: "We can't afford John McCain." And then, when you realize your ideas will health care plan bankrupt the nation, - say you can’t rule out taxing health care benefits – you lose the support of some of your people.

When you say: "No political appointees in an Obama-Biden administration will be permitted to work on regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years. And no political appointee will be able to lobby the executive branch after leaving government service during the remainder of the administration" and then change your mind the day you are sworn into office – you lose the support of some people.

When you pledge to close a terrorist detention camp and then find out there may just be reason for one, and realize you can’t even get your own party to stand behind the closing of the prison – you lose the support of some people.

When you bailout "too big to fail companies" with taxpayer dollars and they declare bankruptcy and then take over as the owner in violation of both the Constitution and the Anti-trust laws of the United States– you lose the support of some people.

When you force the passage of a $787 billion dollar stimulus package and promise it will work and it will specifically control unemployment and keep it under 8% and then less than 6 months later, unemployment is at 9.5% and climbing fast – you lose the support of some of your people.

When your own Vice President goes on TV and states something about misreading the state of the economy … oops. – You lose the support of some of your people.

When the supporters of the "green" initiatives in turn out to be GE, Nancy Pelosi, and Al Gore… among other rich policy makers… and your people begin to question your motives -you lose some of your people.

Maybe, just maybe, there is enough power in the people to slow this administration down.

Quinnipiac University released a poll on the President’s policies and the level of acceptance they garner from the populous. Quite to my pleasure I admit, Obama's overall approval rating in the state of Ohio dropped from 62 percent to 49 percent with the economic approval rating dropping from 57 percent to 46 percent.

More importantly, the poll notes a large decline in the support from independents. Independents propelled Obama over the top into the White House and he needs their vote to remain strong for both re-election and as a tool to keep his Democratic supporters in Congress from losing their Congressional seats in 2010. His approval rating with Independents took a staggering nose-dive, - 51% down to 33% on economic policy and 59% to 38% on over-all approval.

Ohio is just one State…. But I’ll take it. It is a very important State and one that has felt very strong effects of Obama’s miscalculation of the state of the economy.

What we are experiencing in the political arena right now is an attempt by the administration to control most aspects of public and private sections of the economy.

What we are also experiencing in this attempt is the political suicide of the administration as well. As the Obama administration sinks us deeper and deeper into debt and pushes us further and further away from prosperity, the American people will rebel, poll numbers will continue to decline and we will either see a reversal of the Democratic run Congress or a back off of current initiatives.

One thing is for sure, Obama is already slipping – both in the polls of the people and within the ranks of his own party.

maryannscarangello, I sometimes wonder that for what reportage and citations you might have in this piece, there definitely seems to be an angle of "grinding the battle axe" against Obama right now(?) Granted, Op-Ed pieces can prove critical in journalism, but what are you trying to pursue through these stories: sheer reportage to the tee, or some other motives?
  • Reply By firesisle firesisle | 5 months ago
Do you somehow think that all the rest of the population should just turn around and ignore that obvious anomalies in Obama's speech and actions, in the same manner as the drive-by media?

    Not gonna happen here...

Maximus - that Obama is not at all what he campaigned on and that the entire campaign was a snow job on the American public.

The reforms he is pushing through Congress that take away one freedom at a time - are the reason for the articles.

Public awareness MAximus. Is there really any reporting coming from main stream media? NO! It only comes at this point from the citizens... the people least likely to be aware of what is happening under their noses that will indefinitely affect their future and that of our children.

So you sense a certain tilt in my journalism? Yes, just as I laugh when watching the tilt on the main stream news.

My articles show Obama in a different light, and slowly but surely - people are starting to see that promises are nothing more than a way to get yourself into the office and can be a dangerous tool when used with hope and change.

I see Obama as dangerous to this country as Chavez was to his.

Last thing - clear reportage to the tee - impossible in this country right now and my articles are definitely opinion based and I would never claim otherwise. - It's easy to follow this man's path of lies - and as the employer, I am watching what he does because most Americans are not. Most are wearing one great big blinder over their eyes- I want the current Constitution on my side, not a new one and I think they do too. They just haven't come off the drug called Obama yet.

If the regular news media would do their jobs and scrutinize this administration and hold their feet to the fire on all the critical issues we are facing, Obama's approval ratings would be no doubt be alot lower than they are. We would not be on the brink of Nationalizing Health Care of talking about Climate control or Cap & Trade. There is no doubt in my mind that the State Run Media is in the tank for the Obama admin since day one. For one, NBC & General Electric have a vested interest in seeing to it that Obama is seen in good light because GE will be the beneficiary of billions of dollars if Nationalized Health Care is passed. Ge has invested millions of dollars in software and technology that will be used in the automation of health records.
So maryanne, thank you once again for doing the job that the State Run Media has failed to do for all of us.

The War on Terror is different. It creates a state of permanent external warfare, the prerequisite for an internal police state or totalitarian system. It is not impossible and no one should ever think it is. That is a very real danger and one that I am certain T.Jefferson, B.Franklin and co. were all worried about. It has happened before, which is why they wrote the constitution, and ignoring it threatens to let it happen again.

Good article. What I think you're advocating for is genuine decision making on the part of the people, as opposed to the party blinders. But we need to wait and see. It's hard to know how much of what's going on right now is the result of Obama being overly optimistic about how quickly he could change things vs Obama messing up. I know that by the end of the last administration there was alot (if I used two words it would mean "a space" and I don't like saying "much" so forgive the slang) there was alot of downward momentum in the economy and Obama's oversight might simply be in how fast it can turn around. Or that might not be the case and the measures he's taking might be increasingly detrimental. The problem with economics is that we're still in the medicinal stages of using leeches to balance the 4 humors that control the body, if you know what I mean. I think you're advocating that we drop the reverence for this great man who came out of nowhere to take the presidency, and start actually scrutinizing his decisions in an objective manner. On that front I could not agree with you more. If four years pass and thing have not picked up, then I won't vote to reelect him and none of us should. But I'm not going to wait six months and then blow the whistle that this whole thing was a snafu from the beginning. He's trying to pick up the pieces left over from bad mortgage practices and poor economic policies (ie. more war) and that isn't going to happen over night.

Having said that, I disagree with any kind of "too big to fail" idea, there's no such thing in a true Lockean system and to subscribe to it is pushing us further in the direction of oligarchy. I disagreed with where he chose put his stimulus money (back to those who had already messed up their finances, as opposed to the people losing their homes who would then have to pay it back to the banks anyway, etc.), but I'm not going to say all is lost quite yet, and luckily no one is in a position to do so. He has 4 years to do what he can and the best thing to do right now is to not drag out feet - which you also seem to agree with by asking the GOP to shut up to let Obama dig his own grave, so to speak. We can't expect him to snap his fingers and make everything perfect (though I suspect more Democrats expected that than Republicans) and in 3 and a half years we'll get a chance to change direction if that's what need be. And if it is, I'll be shouting about it as much as anyone.

"I think you're advocating that we drop the reverence for this great man who came out of nowhere to take the presidency, and start actually scrutinizing his decisions in an objective manner."

    YES!

"He's trying to pick up the pieces left over from bad mortgage practices..."

SIDE NOTE: As much a creation of the Democrats as Republicans.

"He has 4 years to do what he can and the best thing to do right now is to not drag out feet - which you also seem to agree with by asking the GOP to shut up to let Obama dig his own grave, so to speak."

Mr. Orange - you've summed it up perfectly! Kudos... but I'll still argue a LOT.
  • Reply By MrOrange MrOrange | 5 months ago
    not drag our feet* sorry.

If this is how you feel, then I agree with you, I just have more faith that Obama is on a good path and will come through in time. But faith can be dangerous at times as well.

And for you, I expect nothing less.
  • Reply By Write4Life Write4Life | 5 months ago
Much more faith. I don't align with his principles so will be far more criticle....

Faith I do have - but it isn't in Obama or any politican for that matter!
  • Posted By MaximusYoung MaximusYoung | 5 months ago
maryannscarangello, if I may ask, do you have any sort of party affiliation, and Mr. Orange, too(?) I'm just trying to grasp the political ecology behind all this commentary...
  • Reply By Write4Life Write4Life | 4 months ago
Maximus - I would proudly call myself a republican if the republican party would stand up for what it is suppose to be about... That said, I am conservative and I stand for the Constitution, it's laws, and for two beliefs... We are served better by smaller federal government and LOWER taxes.
  • Reply By firesisle firesisle | 5 months ago

This is a ridiculous debate. It's almost as if people want him to fail because of their own partisan politics, which is as bead as what they accuse other people of having done during the Bush administration. The man, Bush, pulled the wool over everyone's eyes with a fake war, got the U.S. into a state of permanent warfare (the pre-condition for totalitarian systems) and instituted a policy of domestic surveillance and detention without oversight and people continue to support that. Obama has, so far, basically finished what the treasury department bureaucrats had already instituted in the first place and is raising taxes. A tax increase is just that, it is not the imposition of a totalitarian state. The man has been in power 6 months and his first big thing was to win the rest of the world over since he'd already won over the American people.

To flesh this out, did you know that the first time the US government printed treasury bills was during WW1. It needed to find a way to pay for the war and couldn't borrow from any other governments since they were all in the war. So it issued public debt and then started selling debt. Now the major buyer is China. The relevance of this is that the only time the US started to borrow money, and has since, is to finance warfare. There is no disconnect between external activities and internal, they are linked,. In this case, because the US maintains such massive defence expenditure, basically for global power projection, the costs are bound to rise inside the country. It should just be obvious. Instead of ranting on Obama, help him end major US involvment abroad, cut defence spending and stop supporting the Republicans or whoever else calls him weak on defence and National Security just because of party affiliations.

You know that's what they'll do if he cuts it, as will parts of his own party. But it is the obvious, smart thing to do. If you guys are looking for a way to get the government out of your own lives, change how it gets all its resources and brings them home, because eventually all these things come right back around to bite you in the a**.

Democrat, republican, they're all the same, but if a man is genuinely trying to make peace externally, support it, regardless of your party, and see what comes up. You'd be surprised at how different your country will look when it doesn't have to spend a trillion dollars a yeasr on disposable commodities like bullets.

And I'm not even a peacenick. I just think that for people who don't want to pay more taxes, etc, who don't want to see bigger govt. etc. this should be obvious.
  • Reply By firesisle firesisle | 4 months ago
The national debt has been around since the Revolutionary War. It's nothing new.

My opposition to Obama has nothing to do with my party affiliation. I was so disenchanted with GW, I took a serious look at Obama. In my estimation, he failed muster because he talked about change but didn't show me any real solutions, and since he's been in the office, it's been business as usual.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I have a high degree of confidence that it won't happen; that's not a partisan evaluation, it's a pragmatic one. I see a man who charms but doesn't perform, who promises but doesn't deliver, who has his own agenda and that agenda isn't good for the US.

You can't borrow your way out of debt; you can't borrow your way to a stable economy; you can't continue to bail out the big guys on the backs of the American people.

  • Reply By Write4Life Write4Life | 4 months ago
It's way too early - I think the last campaign was ridiculous and to spend that much money is a complete waste of money.

I also do not believe the republicans have a clear front runner. I personally like John Kasich who is now running for governor of Ohio. He's smart, ethically moral (or so he has acted) and a good representative of the traditional republican - not one who leans to the left.
  • Posted By MaximusYoung MaximusYoung | 4 months ago
True, but what about Utah's John Huntsman(?) He seems like a very amicable, strongly appealing across party lines, and truly thoughtful- except now he's the U.S. ambassador to China...
  • Posted By Write4Life Write4Life | 4 months ago
Maximus - sorry I just saw this - I am not a fan of the grand ole Utah Governor. Although I agree with you - he appeals on both sides of the line - he's somewhat removed himself form the running. He also aligns more as a moderate republican - almost leaning to the left and I think the republican party is better served by an ethically conservative nominee. I believe our country needs direction away from war, taxes, and the loss of industrialization and Huntsman would not bring us that. If anything - his support of cap and trade is completely off base with the struggle America will face if cap and trade makes its way through the Senate.

Maryann, well written through it all. Any small business owner should be watching Obama and the rest of this left winged favored government closely and they should scare the hell out of you. I love the Dems who feel that only the lower income should get the help and the upper class should pay. Obviously they do not aspire to anything more than getting government hand outs. Keep up the great writings I will look forward to them. Oh and for moderates, they are individuals who cannot make up their minds!
