When watching ESPN last night, I saw a stat about Albert Pujols that boggled my mind and made me began to speculate. The stat was this: with the bases loaded this season, Pujols was 6-for-7 with 4 grand slams and 20 RBI’s. Now, is that just good hitting in a high pressured situation? Is it just bad pitching by pitchers in that situation because they are too nervous by the idea that they have nowhere to put Pujols and they have to throw to him? Or is Pujols becoming one of the greatest young hitters of all time? The answer in my opinion is yes to all of these questions, but is Pujols doing the unthinkable? Is he taking steroids?
Now, like I said before, I am clearly speculating, because in my opinion I don’t think he is, but there has been other players who I didn’t think were taking them and were. So are we starting to be ignorant and naïve about a player who smashes 30 homers before July 1st and hits 4 grand slams with the bases loaded in 7 at-bats (not even in a full season)? I mean don’t get me wrong, the guy IS an unbelievable hitter, and like I said, I hate to speculate about this topic, especially with Albert Pujols involved.
His stats over the last few years and all the steroid controversy with the great stars in Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro, Alex Rodriquez and most recently, Manny Ramirez, has made me wonder about Pujols. Not because of the fact that I think he is doing steroids, but just plainly the fact of what it would do to baseball if he was taking steroids? The league would be completely destroyed—figuratively speaking. I just feel as though kids are looking up to a guy of Pujol’s caliber more and more each year. There’s no doubt that he has earned that spot, through his hard work, but the idea of steroids by another major baseball player would kill the hopes of children and fans alike, not to mention the integrity of the game.
If Many Ramirez can get away with a decent reception on his first game back from steroids and move on from the fact that he took them with a simple “I’m back” to the journalists that showered Dodger Stadium yesterday, then can the MLB look the other way if—God forbid—Pujols or any other stars are taking steroids? I mean, I’m thinking no because they threw Manny under the bus pretty quick—which they should have, they did the right thing—but I feel like people just took Manny doing steroids as a “Manny being Manny” episode and not a shameful act.
So in speculation, could there be life after baseball if one of the league’s most consistent and impressive players get caught up with the demons of baseball? Would it ruin the game? Well, I hope it never comes to that because Pujols can single-handedly change a single game, as well as the game of baseball with every swing he takes.
(Just so we’re clear, this is not written because Pujols is taking steroids, this is clearly SPECULATION and is in no way, shape or form, written as a way of hating on Pujols. Pujols is an unbelievable player and I personally love the way the guy plays the game, his stats just boggle my mind at times. Thanks for reading.)
