If a man and young woman get married against the wishes of the extended family they are STILL punished by death in some parts of Pakistan.

Recently, a tragic incident to this effect took place in a place called Charsadda which is in Mardan district, the North West Frontier Province(N.W.F.P.) of Pakistan.

According to "Dawn"an 18 year -old girl and her beau who was about 20, eloped and then got married secretly. They were living in their new home. The uncle and cousins of the bride were not happy with the marriage and to" save the honour of the family" they tracked down the couple and disguised as policemen knocked at the door one night. They first killed the groom and then his bride. They also shot dead the father, mother and sister of the young married man who had accepted the marriage and were living with the happy couple.

Salman ,the groom's brother escaped and reported to the authorities about the tragic incident. It was learnt that the culprits had fled from the scene of the crime discarding the police uniforms which also had a cell phone in one of its pockets. It was discovered that they were the young bride's relatives that had committed the gruesome crime. The neighbours' houses were also besieged by the attackers so that they could not warn the victims before hand.

It is hoped they will be traced soon and brought to justice.

It is 21st century, however, times seem to not change for some places around the world. Hopefully the culprits are captured soon.

These people have no honour or any intention of keeping honour. Chances are they were one of them engaged to or wanted to marry this girl and that's why they chased her down. This type of crime is all too prevalent. In 2008 there were 284 incidences of honour killing and 293 of karo kari. That is aside from over 500 murders of women in similar circumstance. In only 50 cases of honour killings were people and only 65 people were arrested in cases of Karo Kari. This is partly because in many cases the killers pay off or know the police and are able to get away. Despite the honour killing laws passed by the Musharraf regime. In other cases it is also because the police themselves and the local authorities actually agree with this barbaric practice and are willing to turn a blind eye. The lack of education is so severe that many authorities simply don't care. If things like this are to stop first it must be because the political and upper social classes take action and get people educated about how wrong it is.

Thanks Changez, for your comments and updates regarding my report about honor killings.Lack of education seems to be the main cause of many vices in our society. It is hoped that the authorities arrest the culprits and serve them severe punishment in the recent incident.

What family honor is there in murder? Killings like this still go on in
some parts of the former Yugoslavia also. There was a news story some years ago that a Macedonian man married a Serbian woman in Macedonia and
was to go and live with his bride in Serbia. I believe their names were Bozhko and Anchica. They crossed into Serbia over the bridge by night and
the wife's relatives were supposed to take them home. As they entered into Serbia they were set upon by people with guns, shot dead and left in
a pool of blood under the bridge. If they stayed in Macedonia nothing of that kind would have happened. It is thought that Anchica's relatives were communists and Bozhko being Catholic, the communists murdered them. Slobodan Miloshevic was still the government. 5/7/2009.

Yes you're right and its very sad, prabirghose. Also common if a high caste Brahmin marries a low caste Shudra isn't it? Lack of education being the main cause, I feel.

Fauzia, that is horrible. They are passing judgement and carrying out the sentence they see fit. I'm not familar with Pakistan laws but was that legal at any time? I mean, to punish people for getting married. That's insane and unheard of. Do you know if they caught them yet?
