Quite an intriguing article, maryannscarangello. You've addressed a very unique thread of American political life that definitely deserves more critique and review: the sheer potency of patriarchy in the American political system, even in the 21st century, from across the political spectrum. Somehow, your angles of narration balance out fact with op-ed workings, not the easiest to work with. Furthermore, as an independent of sorts myself, conservative, liberal, and other political types need to confront this issue, or at least hear and reflect on it, fare more meaningfully than the current media establishment allows.

Our most recent presidential nomination process and election proved to me also that sexism trumps racism in this country. The prevalent unawareness about this reality is particularly discouraging to me. Thanks for highlighting that sad reality and contributing to consciousness-raising.

Thanks Borderexpress - I find it particularly disturbing as well.
Maybe one of these days we will actually stop fighting each other and start to see progress.

Well, and Marayann, I know I disagree with you on just about everything, but here's another one; I don't know if one can call this feminine victimisation. You are absolutely right when you say that Sarah Palin was not the right choice for a VP pick but not because of what you say. She was wrong because she wasn't ready. I know it sounds ridiculous that a woman who made governor in her state should not have the experience required and a 2 year? senator should, but there it is. Barack Obama was a man ready to face the challenges of a Presidency because his gravitas and knowledge give him a definite edge over even the hardest opposition he may have to face out there in the world. The US President is not just the US head of state, he is your representative to the world. Bush threw out the last vestiges of US isolationism, or reticence, in dealing with the world. In his wake a man fully able to take on the hostile and the friendly members of the international community was needed. That, more than anything else perhaps, was why Obama won and why people around the world celebrated his victory. I do know nothing about Alaskan politics, but I think Sarah Palin knew very little beyond Alaskan politics, which is why I say she wasn't ready. When she was announced I thought it was a very smart move by the McCain campaign to introduce a firecracker like her, out of left field, who would also appeal to so many women. But I think as time went by, it became apparent that she wasn't ready to face some of the potential challenges that a President, and even a VP have to be ready for. In some ways I feel it is not my business to comment on American politics, but it is a fascinating and important subject, so I like to weigh in my bit. Sarah Palin seems like a great lady, but she definitely needs a bit more experience.

If the Republican Party is dumb enough to pick Palin to run for President,
I will be very happy to mail Sarah a donation. The ex-Governor hasn't got a clue. [;-)

Changez - Obama wasn't ready either. Of all the people in this country our elected officials are not a good example of the masses. It's all about money and no longer about the Constitution.

Follow Obama's campaign donations and where he's focusing his policies - you'll see how politics work.

Palin - even WITH a stellar performance would have been ripped to shreds. She was a pro-life female and in this country - that's not acceptable for the office of President or VP.
