Sarah Palin showed again, why she resonates with so many Americans who cherish American Values of duty, honor, service, tolerance, sense of justice and courage. Sarah Palin is the Anti-Politician Politician who much to the consternation of the political and media elite is a normal American, who took it as a given that she had a duty to serve her family and community to the best of her abilities, and in times that threatens to bring any one of us to our knees.
Her sense of public duty took the form of everything from car-pooling the hockey kids to becoming a community and political figure in a tiny Alaska town and finally in the governor’s chair.
She stepped up to the plate to support her all too human family when reality intruded on our fantasy ideal family.
Palin and her family have survived the most critical gauntlet of them all… the squalid, filthy, mire of small town politics in both Wasilla and Juneau. Having been so vetted, she and her family were immune to the slings of the ‘professionals’ who grow increasingly irritated with what is to them an inexplicable bond that normal people feel with Mrs. Palin.
Faced with a growing, political, and malicious smear campaign against her at great monetary cost to the state’s taxpayers as much as to her, and even greater emotional cost on her family she put family and community first. If she were to win the fight, she had to invoke the words of Dean Martin as Little John in Robin and the Seven Hoods
“When your opponent’s sittin’ there holding all aces, there’s only one thing left to do: Kick over the table.”
That is exactly what she did. To the shock of everyone (the ‘professionals’) who expected her to follow their planned route to slaughter, she took control of the table in one fell swoop. Like Minutemen picking off Red Coats on Lexington Green she just blazed a path through the wilderness around them, and now she gets to make the rules with speaking, writing, activism and perhaps even higher office.
The timing too was brilliant, even I misunderstood at first.
By dropping this bomb in the middle of the first day of a four-day holiday the story should have been dead on arrival in terms of running the news cycle. From all accounts it was Sarah and Sarah alone who decided to follow her gut and make her move when she did. I thought that there was a whopper of a Sarah did something story in the wings!
Not only was I wrong but rather than disappear in the news hers became the only hard news story in a fluff weekend, and her well-chosen words and emotions got the full attention of the media suddenly trumpeted into action.
The brilliance of her timing though is in that the people who have really been caught off guard and unready are those in opposition to her, the ones who have been running the smear, you know - the Domestic Insurgency of the Left who tremble in fear. That includes no shortage of media spinmeisters, most of whom are enjoying good 50-year old scotch with cronies for the next few days.
While the occupiers party, the occupied have an emerging champion. A champion who plays for keeps it appears. I am glad that I am on her side.
