Internet search engine, Google has launched a new language option in Akan, with the view of encouraging non-English speaking Ghanaians to utilize the Internet. This latest option allows Ghanaians to google Ghanaian websites in their Akan dialects instead of English. Google already has an earlier option out in Hausa, another Ghanaian dialect.
The translation of the Google Website from English to Akan was carried out by a volounteer Ghanaian.
Manager of Google Ghana, Ethel Sowah, said the latest Akan language option is part of Google's long term ambition to include as many non-English speakers as possible in the internet process. Miss Sowah added that Google wanted to make information as useful, relevant and accessible for every one.
Ethel Sowah also pointed that Google's ambition to make accessing the internet easier for non-English speakers was borne out of the realization that not all Ghanaians spoke English, and as a result, they were unable to access the internet. Thus, according to Miss Sowah, Google found the need to to create alternatives for non-English speaking Ghanaians to browse for information on the internet.
