The Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has floored one and all with a people friendly railway budget for 2009-2010. She has announced introduction of 12 pairs of nonstop trains called Duronto service – she has not indicated what the charges would be for this select service. Probably, travelers who want to avail of such service would willingly pay additional charges which might compensate the losses that the railways would otherwise incur as a result of no hike in fares or freight charges. But, how would the nonstop trains operate? Covering a distance of around 2000 kilometers between Mumbai and Kolkata without giving the engine any rest is fraught with dangers and not technically feasible. Is the nonstop supposed to mean that there would not be any official halts in between and the complete train would carry passengers meant for only a single destination?
