In a country that could not come to grips with Shabana Azmi aiming a nonchalant, good humoured social peck on Nelson Madela's cheek not very long ago, about 15 years ago... the latest developments do kinda take the average reader by storm.
However that is not to overlook the spate of Bollywood movies in particular in the last decade or so that have traversed the intervening time since Shabana Azmi aimed a harmless peck at Nelson Mandela, with Bollywood howlers travelling light years away from what they used to be a good 50 years ago, or for that matter even 30 years ago.
Again, while I personally have no sympathies for any LGBTs, except that as human beings we need to all think that if this community/or any LGBT members developed major health issues, they can seek some respite in the fact that at least now with the passing of the new legislation they can openly discuss their problems with the medical fraternity without fear of being persecuted by social/moral stigmas -- nothing more, nothing less, and be able to live with fewer health issues.
As for LH, he is a seasoned journo whose pen can discerningly tunnel through tomes of legalese, voluminous reports, and the stray/isolated incident with remarkable ease. And don't miss his inimitable, strong humour (my own first reaction just this once was, why some of it is so grose...) but he's been at it for 40 odd years and longer, a dispassionate master par excellence whose best talents can come out in sharing dull reports (except that the present story is not dull for normal sensibilities) like lucid stories, and I might say his headlines can sometimes tend to be hugely only yellow and more yell-O!
On face looks, the story shocks normal sensibilities for a country that should be grappling with providing better rights/and safety for normal hetero people -- young and old, single or coupled alike.
If you carefully re-read through the present story, and I needed to do only once -- one cannot lose sight of the fact how LH has woven a fine tapestry of research, law, morals and some shock-effects in presenting his case. Who'd read a journalist if he was not a born shocker?
Yes LH has peppered it alright with his cocktail of research, facts, law and some morals...but I'd still like to add we'll need some new laws there to ensure these new people do not make a nuisance of themselves.
The queer-eyed LGBTs should not be allowed to trample on the basic privacy, safety and security of straighter denizens of citizens.
