Saadi Shirazi

With all the turmoil going on in Iran ,I was curious to read about the rich history of Iran and its famous poet,Saadi Shirazi who was a very world renowned Iranian(Persian) poet from the city of Shiraz.The translation of his poem can be found in the Hall of Nations in New York.

"Of One Essence is the human race,

Thusly has Creation put the Base;

One limb impact is sufficient

For all others to feel the Mace."

Saadi Shirazi was born in 1200 and died in1292. He lost his father in his early childhood and was brought up by his uncle who first had him complete his early education in Iran. Later he was sent to Baghdad to the famous Nezameiyah College.There he completed his education about his religion,Islam.After his studies he was unable to return back to Iran as it had been invaded by the Mongols.Saadi travelled to Syria,Antolia(the ancient part of Turkey),Egypt and Iraq.His work also indicates that he traveled to India and Central Asia as well. His travels can be compared to Marco Polo but are different as he didn't live in 'Pomp and Show'nor to rule like a king over others but he mixed with the ordinary people, mingling with them and sharing their worries and troubles.

The Holocaust, after the Mongol invasion had brought with it a great deal of misery among his people.Saadi returned to his homeland and through his communication in the form of poems and prose, carried his message to ordinary people and especially brought comfort to the survivors of the Holocaust.

He defined 'Anger',by saying .'ANGER that has no limit causes TERROR'.whereas ,

'KINDNESS'that is inappropriate does away with respect.

"Do not be so severe with others as to terrify them;and do not be so lenient with them so that they will take advantage of you".

For 20 years he continued comforting his people and preaching the good qualities a man should develop within himself in order to become a good human being.

Of course, Saadi Shirazi's poems are much more beautiful in the original Farsi language.

I thought of the book, Voice of Conscience, by Behcet Kaya, which I read recently. No matter what religion, each of us must evaluate our own actions and beliefs, in order to live as we should.

Good article and great reminder that individuals should never be stereotyped...learn to know them first! You've helped us in this issue!

Thanks MarcusCato and IPBookReviewer for your comments and observations.No doubt, the real essence of Saadi's works can be obtained from his work in his own mother tongue,Farsi.(Persian)

There is so much wisdom in those closing quotations. I particularly appreciate this post, Fauzia, because I think that the beauty of the heritage of the Middle East region does not receive the attention it deserves in the West.
