After the remaining 14 dancers performed the weekly group dance, this time choreographed by Tyce Diorio the three couples who scored votes in the bottom three were announced. Karla and Vitolio found themselves in the bottom for the third time; joining them were Kayla and Kupono, and Jeannine and Phillip found themselves in the bottom to the first time.
Before the six dancers performed their solos for the judges contemporary ballet couple Patricia Hachey and Desmond Richardson performed a Pas de Deux. And while the judges deliberated on the solo performances and who to send home Grammy Award winning American Idol Kelly Clarkson sang her newest single.
Before the announcements are made as to who will be eliminated head judge Nigel Lythgoe given his comments to the dancers on their performances; tonight Nigel told Jeannine that she had the strongest solo of the night and was brilliant. Nigel said that Kayla had a sweet spirit and was clearly one of the favourites. The third time was not the charm for Karla who while Nigel said was a very good dancer, she did not capture the star quality the judges had hoped and was eliminated from the competition.
On the guys side the decision was unanimous as it was for the girls. Nigel told Phillip that while he was unique and superb at what he did, Phillip still had a lot of work to do learning the other genres; but he would get that chance since Phillip was safe for another week. Nigel told Kupono that his dance was very weak and he needed to show more passion in his performances. Vitolio also found himself in the bottom three for the third time and although he showed great stage presence Nigel said that he didn’t deliver in the end and was also eliminated from the competition.
Since Karla and Vitolio had been paired together, no new couples will be formed for next week’s show when the top 12 perform.
