It is peculiar to me that we as Americans put so much emphasis on the death of celebrities. As soon as the news broke of both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson passing away, the media unleashed their stories of the day. So much time has been dedicated to these two deaths, meanwhile, crises around the world continue to develop, from the protests in Iran, to the illegal coups in Honduras. It appears that we sometimes put all of our energy into celebrities when we really should be focusing on the rest of the world, and even more directly; on our own lives.
Another issue is respect. It seems extremely disrespectful to profit off of these deaths, I'm referring to all of the tribute segments they are showing on TV. You cannot tell me that those were just whipped into fruition out of nowhere as soon as these two celebrities died. Were they being produced months before Farrah Fawcett died? Were the vultures waiting with bloodied breath for her to take her last?
This makes me sad. This makes me question the substance of Americans especially. I would much rather see the media focusing on real issues, and honest issues at that. Is that too much to ask?
