Three sections are pictured of the 2002 will of music legend Michael ...

Two days ago the SABC reported that at the time of his death, Michael Jackson, only weighed 51 kgs and wore a wig.

For someone who spent a great deal of money to look more and more like Diana Ross, and whose outward appearance was so important, this is an interesting fact. He was more than six feet tall, therefore his weight would indicate that he was severely emaciated. It is unlikely that he was able to alter the structure of his own hair in any way and, since he was Black, this hair would not normally have disappeared to the point where he had to wear a wig. Could it be that he was suffering from some severe disease?

We shall just have to wait for the results of the autopsy in order to have these questions answered.

In the meantime, we should be aware of the fact that, while in life he was pilloried by the press in later years (for debt, for child molestation etc), in death he has once again become a star. Like so many who went before him, he was the victim of his own public and the agents who ran his life. We all asked for more and more until in the end he had nothing more to give.

It seems that, like so many celebrities, he came to rely on uppers to see him through the day, and downers to give him sleep at night. In the end it may well have been these drugs which were his downfall.

All that can be said at this stage is: Michael, rest in peace – you deserve it!

Sheer hipocrisy, I would say.

Society is very interesting to examine and sometimes too complicated to understand. I feel that when he was alive, Jackson was constantly bombarded with negative media and that most people who were presented in the news were those against Jackson. In other words, a lot of the attention was on the case of molestation and the people who tagged him as guilty for the crime. When he died, however, the media reverted to positive images of tears for his life and the buying of his CDs. Perhaps the reason for this change in positive attention and accolades is because of the delicate nuances of funerals and death in our society and how we respect those who have passed away. Or perhaps, people have recognized the role they played in Jackson's spiraling downfall.

I really enjoyed this quotation from the article: "We all asked for more and more until in the end he had nothing more to give." This statement is the truth of human nature. We want more and more until we are no longer capable of maintaining the heavy load of what we have insatiablty sought after and acquired. It is a sad natural tendency.

Thanks for your comment. I think that we, as society, were guilty of pushing a number of stars too far and not everyone is a Madonna. She seems to love the limelight, but other people, like Presley, find they just can't handle it. Of course one has to understand that their managers are also often to blame for pushing too hard. A pop star's life is really over at 50; they are no longer 'with it', no longer sexy, and the youth have moved on to other things and other people.
