What's that sound? Oh yeah, the Sounders are in town. A much anticipated match-up between the Portland Timbers, hosting the Seattle Sounders, has come to an end after restoring the traditional rivalry this 1st of July.
The Timbers were defeated by one goal, a final score of 2-1, Sounder's deuce. What the Timbers did achieve, however, was a record holding attendance at their PGE Park stadium. Seattle would not fold despite their visiting obstacles, and in fact would jump to action more quickly than most would have expected following the kickoff. It took virtually no time for Sanna Nyassi to forward an assist from the right side, where Roger Levesque performed a diving header sneaking just inside the near post. The early goal for Seattle established crucial momentum, and set a Sounder's tone for the remainder of the match. Before the Timbers could answer, the Sounders accomplished finding the goal again as Stephen King fired a thirty footer in the net after a drop-back pass from Nate Jaqua. Mandjou Keita scored the Timber's only goal. All goals were recorded before the second half begun. The five minutes of stoppage time would not allow Portland any further opportunities.
The Sounders were able to edge-out the Timbers during their classic battle in Portland Wednesday. Seattle's additional three shots on goal may have sealed their clinch win over Portland by just one goal. Nevertheless, the Sounder's proved themselves once again, representing their caliber stature in the MLS standings.
