Police have opened fire during angry demonstrations held in defiance of a curfew in the town of Baramullah in Indian-administered Kashmir.

One person was injured as police tried to disperse the protesters.

The town had been placed under indefinite curfew after the killing of two youths when police fired on demonstrators on Monday.

The protests in Baramullah were triggered by the alleged assault of a woman at a local police station.

The government has ordered a magisterial probe into the killings of the protesters and also into the initial allegations of assault.

The neighbouring town of Sopore has also been placed under curfew as a precautionary measure.

A three-day strike has begun across the Kashmir Valley to protest against the police use of force in the Baramullah protests.

Separatist groups called for the strike over the recent rape and murder of two women in the southern town of Shopian.

The Shopian killings have caused unrest across the Kashmir Valley for more than a month now.

The Kashmir issue is now beyond conscionable action by either India or Pakistan. On the Pakistani side is a history of lost chances to make peace and actively destabilising the state for strategic, military reasons (so abandoning the moral high-ground), while on India's side is a 60 year history of repression and violence, not including the original illegality and immorality of the takeover itself. Both countries have forfeited their rights to make claims on Kashmir and should now let the Kashmiri people decide how they want to live and whether they want to be independent or join one of the state through a plebiscite or referendum. Then we have to respect that decision. Of course India will never agree to this since Kashmir is an 'Integral part' of he union, and they know that if they allow a plebiscite there, then various groups in other states, like Orissa and Bihar, might step up activities in hopes of achieving the same thing, which would tear India apart, literally. However that is the only way to achieve a lasting peace and a just solution to the problem. Also, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq should be PM of Pakistan.
