The suicide bomber threw a hand grenade before he blew his explosive packed jacket, sources on the border and eyewitnesses said. The volume of the suicide blast was very high. The wood made room for the four Afghan lady searchers was also blown, which caught big fire. In the killed persons two Afghan border security personnel including two lady searchers were included. A young Afghan girl identified as Gul Bano also succumbed to his serious injuries at Landikotal hospital whose one leg had also been cut with the blast. The other killed persons could not be identified as they had been taken by the Afghan security guards from the spot. Some of the injured at Landikotal hospital were identified as Rozi Khan, resident of Peshawar, Muhammad Deen Afghan, Gul Naz, Shah Nawaz Khyber and Zameer Khan,
Soon after the suicide blast the Afghan border security staff and the Pakistan border staff closed the Torkham border with the chain. The Afghan security personnel cordoned off the whole area and started rescue activities to extinguish the fire and collect the parts of the human bodies, which were scattered there. The ambulances of Landikotal hospital and Al-Khidmat Foundation reached the border soon after the blast to take the wounded to hospital at Landikotal whereas an eyewitness said that the most serious Afghans were taken in helicopter from Gumrak area.
The Afghan officials refused the tribal journalists to enter into the Afghan side for coverage of the scene where the suicide attack took place very near the border. They also denied to give any details of the blast or to comment on the incident. The US led forces also reached there to visit the site with armoured vehicles and full security. Torkham gate remained closed for more then three hours for every kind of traffic and the pedestrians. The common Afghan people and the tribal transporters suffered greatly due to the closure of the border for a long time. After the blast the security at the gate was very tight and every body was under observation from both sides.
