It Depends on What Your Definition of Coup is

President Obama said on Monday that the situation in Honduras sat a "terrible president" and it was illegal. After a meeting with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, Obama said, "It would be a terrible precedent if we start moving backwards into the era in which we are seeing military coups as a means of political transition, rather than democratic elections."

However, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated, "We do think that this has evolved into a coup." She added, "If we were able to get to a ... status quo that returned to the rule of law and constitutional order within a relatively short period of time, I think that would be a good outcome."

So why is the administation devided on wheter or not what happened in Honduas was in fact a coup?

Under US law, all aid must be stopped to countries where an democratically elected official is ousted by military coup.

The State Department has requested an increase in aid to Honduras to 68.2 million dollars, this would be an increase of 25 million dollars from the current fiscal year. This money would be used in arms purchases and military training for anti-drug operations. However, these numbers do not reflect Defense Department aid to the country.

When asked if the US was considering cutting aid to Honduras, Clinton simply shuck her head.

It appears that once again the White House is bending the rules to fit their needs. After hiring lobiest, not posting bills to be reviewed, and going back on closing Gitmo, I can't say that I am surprised. It appears that he US will now be supplying aid to a non-elected military regime.
