Sony Gets Serious About Mobile Games

Until today, Sony has hesitated to position their Sony PSP handheld directly against mobile phones that offer playable software. Now, however, that seems to be changing. According to the Nikkei business daily (as reported by Reuters here: http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTRE55Q0HQ20090627?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews ) the company is planning to create a team that will start exploring possibilities for products that will tighten the relationship between its Ericsson mobile phone and its portable gaming hardware. This could happen as early as July. The impetus for this comes from various other gaming companies, mainly Capcom, Square Enix, and Sega who are all developing games for the iPod and iPhone. In all likelihood, Sony believes that it must confront the threat to its PSP handheld from the mobile market. To further their aims on this subject, Sony has also encouraged developers to make a broad array of applications for PSP owners to download, so that they may have “an opportunity to develop non-gaming applications,” and cut the cost of its developer kit.
