This is such a complex situation. There are clerics who see it as their responsibility to protect their revolution and the people who depend on them; then there are clerics who are out on the streets to keep their people from being beaten by soldiers loyal to the regime, which is also run by clerics. None of them want to change the fundamental nature of the regime, i.e. a theocracy. None of them are fond of the U.S. Most of the protesters aren't either but may want to see changes in Iran that the regime may not. Coming to a conclusion about a situation like this, charged with repressed sexual energy and a history longer than most is near impossible without being there on the ground and talking to people.
