Scene Cut Out Of Final Bruno Edit

In the wake of Michael Jackson's death, the makers of Bruno, Sasha Baron Cohen's new film, have decided to edit out a scene making fun of the King of Pop. In the scene Bruno interviews Latoya Jackson, Michael Jackson's sister. He tries to get her to talk higher, to have her sound like her brother. At one moment he snatches her Blackberry and yells out Michael's phone number in German. Many that know of the edit to the movie believe it is in good taste to edit the scene, I do not. Though I have not seen the scene, I don't think editing the scene is a good way to honor Michael's memory. Torward the end of Michael's life he was the butt of many jokes, and I don't see anything wrong with that. He himself has made fun of himself. He acted as himself in in Men in Black 2, where he joked about himself. I think to honor and respecct Michael Jackson the scene should be left in, even if the scene is over the top in true Sasha Baron Cohen fashion.

I have to disagree. The scene absolutely should be deleted. It's so unfortunate that the media never left him alone. Sure he had his controversies, but those were his personal matters. His problems should never have been exploited as they were. Jokes and parodies fueled by negative media coverage tend to overshadow the remarkable achievements of his musical career and lifetime. They paint a negative picture. Instead, MJ should be shown in a positive light. He broke barriers, changed music for the better, and brought so much joy and happiness to millions of people all around the world with his art. It would not at all be appropriate to make fun of him or portray him as a negative person, especially at a time where so many are saddened by the loss of an icon.

I understand where you are coming from but I don't see why it was okay to make fun of him while he was alive, and now it is not, though you are saying it wasn't okay then either. I didn't hear too many people complaining about jokes about him when he was living.
I am a huge Michael Jackson fan, the kind that does not think he ever molested anyone, but I also appreciates jokes made about him. Just like I enjoy jokes about anyone else, including myself.
From the description of the scene it seems as if he wasn't really being made fun of that badly, it was Latoya that was being made fun of more.
Either way I respect what you said and what you mean, but I'm one of those people that doesn't think that making fun of celebrities is anything to apologize about. Just take a joke as a joke.
Just would have liked to have seen the scene. It'll probably be on dvd anyway.
    Thanks for commenting.

I'm not saying that "making fun of celebrities is anything to apologize about." Personally, I enjoy such mockery. However, with Michael Jackson, I think it has gotten to a point where the jokes and parodies define who he is, especially for younger generations. Because of these jokes, many have a wrong negative impression. At the end of the day, he should be remembered as a positive person that had such a big impact not only on music, but on the world. If they're going to continue to make fun of him, bigger efforts should be made to embrace his legacy.

Right. Again I understand where you are coming from and what you are saying but you might be surprised by how many younger people, besides all the jokes, still love and respect Michael Jackson.
I've tried not to bring up the things people make fun of him for but really the things Michael Jackson was ridiculed for, many other stars are ridiculed for also. For example cosmetic surgery, Kenny Rogers, Burt Reynolds, Sly Stone, Dolly Parton, Tara Reid, Linsay Lohan, OCto-mom etc. He was also ridiculed for his run in with the law, like Nick Nolte, Robert Downey Jr., Snoop Dogg, P. Diddy, Lindsay Lohan again. The difference between those celebs and Michael was the status of stardom. Michael was just a much bigger star than all of them combined.
But I do agree with you, near the end of Michael's life he was ridiculed too much, but what I think most people overlook is that the people making fun of him were probably among his biggest fans as well. Just poking fun of him like many do of Prince.
Anyway, maybe you are right, maybe it is distasteful to have that scene in the movie, but this is Bruno, the whole thing will probably be distasteful.
Anyway, thanks for the post, but I want Michael remembered for everything that happened to him, and everything he did, including the jokes, no matter how bad and offensive. Because no matter how much they made fun of him, his fan-base just seemed to grow and grow, because his talent couldn't be ignored.

My point is that in recent times, NEARLY EVERY reference Michael Jackson got in the media, in film, or in television was comical or negative. Most of the other individuals you mentioned aren't solely being joked about. Most of them are still making headlines for their work (not that it matters as none of them can be compared to Jackson). I guess its okay to continue to ridicule him, as long as efforts are made to embrace his legacy as well. You can't keep bashing him and showing his negatives without showing his positives too. So far, it has been a one way street.
