Palin/Burke Photoshop

Just one week after the Sarah Palin uproar about Letterman's joke heard round the world, Mrs. Palin is back again. Palin's latest fury is now toward an amateur Alaskan blogger. Linda Kellen Biegel, who blogs in support of the Alaska Democratic Party under the name "Celtic Diva," photoshopped an image of Palin and her 1-year old son Trig, who suffers from Down Syndrome. In the photo, Trig's head is replaced with the head of local conservative radio host and avid Palin supporter, Eddie Burke. The photo was suppose to suggest that this is where Burke would like to be because of his "obsession" for Sarah Palin.

In a statement to CNN, a Palin spokesperson said,"Recently we learned of a malicious desecration of a photo of the Governor and baby Trig that has become an iconic representation of a mother's love for a special needs child... The mere idea of someone doctoring the photo of a special needs baby is appalling." She went on to call for President Obama to speak out against such behavior from "liberal activists."

"Babies and children are off limits," She said. "It is past time to restore decency in politics and real tolerance for all Americans. The Obama Administration sets the moral compass for its party."

Beigel defended the photo by stating that it was in no way meant to make fun of Trig Palin, but rather to mock Eddie Burke. "It's called 'Baby Burke' because it's Eddie Burke…basically his probable second-biggest fantasy about the Governor," she wrote. "So, connecting the dots for you…WE'RE MAKING FUN OF EDDIE BURKE!!!!!!"

So I am sure that we haven't heard the end of this fight, because from what I can see, it is already making a huge stir within the conservative crowd. I have been reading blogged responses all morning and the general tone from conservatives is... well you call it.

"This is the most disgusting thing I have seen on a blog relating to any political party. It is disgusting making fun of a little boy who is handicapped. It is just shameful.
How can this women live with herself doing something like this. It is a new low, " said one blogger on the site Conservatives4Palin.com.

Another blogger went on to say, "...That picture of Trig is beyond the pale. It is VILE...THIS IS A POOR LITTLE HANDICAPPED BOY...HAVE YOU NO SENSE OF WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG??? I don't care who's child it is. This is no way to treat a handicapped child or adult. Making fun of them. Making a public picture of a handicapped DEFENCELESS person for others to laugh at and make fun of...geezzz.. THIS IS JUST A NEW LOW FOR THE DEMS."

Geezz, you got it! Is this what we have come to in America? We are in the middle of the worst recession since the great depression, we have a health care system that is in the dumps and still to this day we have troops dying in Iraq, 2,247 days after former President Bush declared mission accomplished in Iraq. Where are you on these issues Mrs. Palin? What is your policy on the issues that affect our country? And what almost seems to make it worse is that I am talking about it to, sucked into the drama just like the rest of America. We love the drama don't we?

But let me just make a few points while on the issue of insensitive and tasteless jokes. Now as I have said before I try not to be at all partisan, I have my agreements and disagreements with both sides of the spectrum and I think they could all use a little "time off' sometimes. Now, I am not defending the photo, i personally didn't think it was all that funny and not a great photoshop job either.

But the idea of its photo does have its merrit. Lets not forget that this is the same Eddie Burke that was suspended from his job as a radio host for broadcasting the phone numbers of the women involved in organizing a protest against Sarah Palin! And these women were then subjected to receiving threatening phone calls.

So should Sarah Palin and her party be held responsible for this? Shouldn't they have to step forward and condemn this sort of action. What about the conservative right wingers who stand in the street protesting homosexuality, calling them faggots, and immoral and saying that GOD hates them? Should Sarah Palin and the leading figures of the Republican party have to stand up and condemn these actions? Will they?

These are the questions i ask because of the statement made by Miss Palin's spokesperson, ""It is past time to restore decency in politics and real tolerance for all Americans. The Obama Administration sets the moral compass for its party." What decency? Where is your decency? Where is your condemnation of prejudice within America?

And let's not forget that Palin's former running mate, John McCain and his joke back in the late 90's about Chelsea Clinton. "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno." Wheres the decency there? Why wasn't the Conservative community so up in a roar about that? Why? Because it wasn't directed at a conservative.

And therein lies the hipocracy. I don't care about the jokes. I dont care who makes them toward who. I think that once youre in the public spotlight, you are just set up forever to be a figure of mockery and tasteless jokes. But this call on President Obama to "do something" about this. What is he going to do? Pass some kind of law against it? Make it illegal to make jokes about public officials? A little repressive dictator hand coming down to shut us all up?

Get real. And please for the love of GOD, get over yourselves.

Sorry to say, but that picture about a child with down syndrome is truly offensive and utterly tasteless, not to mention political suicide. The Republican smear machine is a well known part of the political machinery and will rarely turn on its own, that is just a fact. A look at Fox is enough to tell one that. However, that really doesn't take away from how daft this picture is.

    Her baby's name is Trig?
