The irony of the results of the 2008 Presidential election lies in the fact that the very change that Americans were clamoring for, will be the change that undermines many of their hopes & dreams.
I took issue with the youth vote because they were the most easily targeted and molded by the media elite and the Obama message of hope. To the credit of the Obama campaign, they were able to utilize a powerful combination of information control and revisionist history that played on their fears which produced a siginificant enough electoral shift among young & first time voters that for the most part were infatuated, lost on the issues and egged on by parents who just wanted them to vote for the sake of making history.
No parent in their right mind would put their child behind the wheel of a car without making sure that they took the time to teach them how to drive . No parent would intentionally keep their children out of school and deny them an education. Parents preach to their kids about drinking and driving, about safe sex and about not smoking . But on one of the single most important life lessons, they failed miserably.
They failed for the most part to impart their knowledge and advice on the importance of knowing the issues and how they affect their lives before casting an election vote. For some parents it was a moment to take advantage of and bond with their sometimes rebellious children by agreeing to vote for the same candidate. “Sure, go right ahead, vote for change. I can’t tell you anything about this guy other than that he is hipper and younger than that other white old guy and lady from Alaska.”But if you like him, I guess I will vote for him too. Great advice mom & dad.
And that is the shame & irony of the last election. Parents would give their lives for their kids under no circumstance, they are willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to higher learning institutions, they may be willing to pay hundreds for driver education and much more on other tangible & meaningless gadgets to score points with their kids. But they are not willing to invest a dimes worth of time on the consequences of an election vote.
So now, mom & pop, as the Obama administration marches forward towards a nanny-state and government run health-care, you will be left to pick up the pieces now, and hope that your kids will have made enough money to pay for your hip or knee replacement, pay for any cancer medicine the government will not provide for you in your retirement years. The very concern and hopes for a better future for your children may become your worst nightmare.
So when you are waiting for months to get to see a doctor, when you’re hoping that your son or daughter will send you some money to cover for your heating bills instead of using it for his or her next tattoo, please remember the summer of 2009. The summer that created a sense of entitlement and victimhood and discouraged initiative for millions. So for the millions of young man & woman who feel they may have left their parents down & dropped the ball on their futures, you may have one more chance to have have your voice heard. Remember, elections have consequences.
