The first day of summer has come and gone and I am left staring down the barrel of what to do for July Fourth. Well, like any good, red-blooded American, I want to blow the crap out of some explosives and light the sky ablaze in celebration of the of the 233rd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
However here in Colorado we have some pretty weak laws that prohibit any firework that leaves the ground. I guess this is because of the fire danger that regularly sets in around this time of year, but the law doesn't make a lot of sense; it's OK to light off those green crackle balls that shoot sparks all over dry grasses but it's not OK to shoot off artillery shells that typically burn out before hitting the ground? Whatever with that. Thankfully Wyoming is a short drive north and the explosives, I mean fireworks retailers set up shop just over the boarder, just like liquor stores outside of Indian reservations. Wyoming and New Mexico retailers do this every year and I'm sure that they make a killing off us Colorado boys, and until the law changes it will stay that way. I don't like the fact that my money is going to leave the state but I have no choice in this matter. Oh well.
What I don't understand is that northern Colorado and southern Wyoming share the same climate and the same goes for Colorado's southern boarder with New Mexico yet somehow my neighboring states have decided that it's perfectly legal to blow the crap out of some explosives while my state has banned it outside of professional displays. I guess we just drink more down here and get more irresponsible.
