in a war against afghnistan ,A British soldier has died in an explosion in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said on Saturday.
The soldier, from 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, was killed while on a routine patrol near Lashkar Gah in central Helmand province on Friday.
His next of kin have been informed.
The death takes the number of British service personnel who have died in Afghanistan since the start of operations in October 2001 to 169.
A spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, said it was "another sad day" for his soldiers.
British forces are helping to fight the Taliban, who were in government between 1996 and 2001 when they were ousted in a US-led invasion launched after the extremist regime harboured Al-Qaeda figures following the September 11 attacks.
