They Can Not Accept to Freeze the Settlements

Hillary Clinton

The Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister said that his country could not accept to freeze the settlement process completely. His statement comes as an answer to Hilary Clinton’s call to stop construction on Palestinian land.

According to Mr. Lieberman, the Israeli administration has “some understandings with the previous administration, and we [will] try to keep this direction”.

The U.S Secretary of State said that there were no records of such an agreement.

Maybe Mr. Lieberman should be familiarized with something called THE ROAD MAP, but we all know the views and the political platform Mr. Lieberman is trying to follow. An important thing to keep in mind is that Avigdor Lieberman is himself a settler.

At the moment there are around 500,000 Jews living in more than 200 settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister considers the settlements process as something normal, natural that has to accommodate the needs and growth of the Jewish families, but according to the chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, 40 per cent of the built up areas of settlements are vacant.

Avigdor Lieberman is renowned for being a political hawk and his inclusion in the Israeli government is reflective of the recent stance that the Israeli establishment is taking towards extension of their power rather than peaceful negotiation.

Lieberman and his ilk claim their is no Palestinian partner for peace; in this they are promoting a dangerous myth because the truth is they do not want to negotiate.

The Israeli government and establishment is now giving way to and being populated with the supporters of a policy that does not favour establishing a Palestinian state and only extending the boundaries of Israel.

They have no intention of talking and are willing to do anything, literally, to achieve their expansionist goals.

Netanyahu stated that freezing the settlements would not be a condition of peace. While Israel would not be taking any more land, the were going to allow those who were there to stay and live, raising their families in a normal manner.

The Israel's should be free to expand if they choose. The Israeli government does not need American consent to do what is in the best interest of their people, it is their duty not to comply to foreign leaders but to provide for the safety and security of its citizens. The Israeli's occupy the land and expanding is the desire of the people. Let them do with their land as they so choose. It is difficult for the Israeli's to negotiate with those who wont recognize them as a legitimate state.

Fatah and all the major PLO parties recognised Israel in 1990 when negotiations started. They recognise Israel as a sovereign entity with borders.

The Israelis can't expand into other peoples land. It doesn't belong to them no matter their religious beliefs. They occupy the land illegally.

Even HAMAS offered recognition to Israel in 2006 when they were elected but the Israelis chose to ignore it. HAMAS was willing to take all the steps necessary because they were the elected government and wanted to stay in power. Israel immediately blockaded them and started a series of assassinations and killings.

Hell, Israel started HAMAS in 1987. It was their baby. The only think HAMAS was not willing to do was give up all its arms. Sort of like the NRA they feel they have the right to bear arms, especially if Palestine becomes a state.

A majority of Israelis want peace, not more land, The land grab is driven by a smaller, more vocal, and more fundamentalist section of the population, particularly in Jerusalem.

These people will break every law, every humanitarian principle, to extend their own power and the whims of their supporters. They don't want to negotiate, regardless of whether the Palestinians do or don't. They have not wanted to for 15 years, since Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish fundamentalist kid. Do you not see the connection?

It seems to me that Israel's history should give it a perspective to understand and empathize with the plight of a people seeking a homeland. Maybe Israel would agree to a Palestinian state if the Palestinians would acknowledge the right of Israel to exist and stop promising to destroy it.

It is very interesting that everybody is talking about the right of Israel to exist, the right of Jewish people, but nobody is saying anything about the rights of the Palestinians. Nothing about the construction of the separation WALL (against international law, U.N and basic human rights), no words about the Israeli army cutting the olive trees from Palestinian farms, nothing about the Palestinians who have to leave their homes because their construction is considered illegal, nothing about the people from Gaza trapped within the territory. Aren't we forgetting something? There are people trappede in all these actions. What are their rights? When are their rights going to be respected?
